An absolute win

The best and most useful triage book I have found. Actually the most fact filled and realistic nursing education book I've seen. I've been in nursing 25 years, have my CEN, and found Polly's book such a relief from theories and nursing care planning that wastes space. This book gives you the facts, your actions, and the reasons behind them. I've worn out the first book and am about to buy a second one.

Richard Bell originally wrote this book in the late 1930s. His student, W. Montgomery Watt, in 1970, decided to "revise" Bell's book into this current edition, but Watt stated "the core of the book is still essentially Bell's work...I have undertaken no special research in the preparation of this revision...tried to arrange the material more logically." Also, Watt produced a "novel feature is the Index to the Quran" in this revision. Chapter subjects are: Muhammad's career; Muhammad's prophetic experience; The writing down of the Quran; The authenticity and completeness of the Quran; The external form of the Quran; (the mysterious letters); Features of Quranic style (rhymes, strophes, didactic forms); The shaping of the Quran (the theory of abrogation, revision, alteration; Bell's hypotheses); The chronology of the Quran (European & Islamic views of dating); the names of the revealed message; The doctrines of the Quran; Muslim scholarship (interpretation and exegesis); Occidental scholarship; Table for converting verse-numbers; Table of sura with chronology; Index to the Quran; Index to this book. One of the Muslim criticisms of any westerner in `studying' the Quran is our `free play' in openly questioning and critiquing the Quran (or any book) - both Bell and Watt do that here: they make you `think' about what Muhammad (or Allah) was trying to `reveal' to those who had "corrupted their books" and strayed from the Straight Path. They analyze MANY topics in the Koran, including: the prophets, Jesus, Jews, abrogation, angels, creation, death, demons, jihad - just about everything of relevance. Both Bell and Watt taught Arabic at Edinburgh University. A classic.

Best Scholarly Intro to the Qur'an

Very good intro text to the Qur'an. Watt does an excellent job of revising and updatings Bell's original book. Watt unearths the jewels from Bell's writings and makes them acceptable to the more inclusinary scholarship in vogue today. The book becomes readable to Muslims. Takes a well rounded critical view of Muslim sources but does not reject them completely. Highly recommended.

Excellent scholarly work on the Qur'an

An excellent introduction to western scholarship on the subject. It's useful to read this together with Fazlur Rahman's "Major Themes in the Qur'an", which is in many respects a Muslim response to Watt and Bell.
Interestingly, the excellent work that Bell and Watt do in locating the Qur'an within the context of Muhammad's life actually tends to refute the work of more radical scholars such as John Wansbrough and Patricia Crone, who claim that the Qur'an was produced in the second or third century of Islam.

As I was reading this book, I came to realize I was thinking about it in the back of my mind when out in public at the grocery store, movie theater and other places where large groups of people are together in one place. It really made me think about how easily germs and viruses can spread between people. I consider this a must read!

Not quite the page turner the first book was but the story continues to develop in a satisfying manner. This book is more about how the characters react when presented with a crisis. Some horrible decisions are made and you might end up hating one of the main characters you didn't expect to hate.

While reading this book, my mind kept visualising that this could really happen! Paul happened to have a very good idea. I don't know if I could have put that stuff in my mouth and held it there, then swallowed. Ugh! I almost barfed! The reality of the situation is mind blowing. A very good book.

Boring and unrealistic

Not every book in this collection is a waste of time, but we're really talking about a few exceptions, here. Why bother to have black heroines if the only thing black about them is their "mahogany" skin? They're all slim, with green eyes or long hair. Few of them even acknowledge that they're black. Except for the insulting "reverse racism" story, they all seem to exist in an alternate universe where race has 0 societal meaning, for either the black or white people.

But that lack of realism isn't the biggest problem with these books. They're, for the most part, really boring. Every time the writer could make a choice that heightens tension or conflict, she goes in the opposite direction, basically getting rid of anything that would keep the reader engaged. With cookie cutter characters and recycled plots this is not a good instinct.

The editing is competent (kudos!). Sex is very vanilla. Dialogue is decent. Prose style is a bit clunky, but good. Too much inner monologue and exposition including dialogue exposition.

Even if you have Unlimited I would not recommend this collection.

This is a great set of books for the price. I enjoyed reading all these books for different reasons and it was good to have so much variety in a set. I have enjoyed these authors separately and together in a set is a plus. I really liked the baby theme, and I had a good time during the holidays reading this set.

A great collection of short stories. There is a story for everyone read this over a couple of days when I was ill which was excellent cause I could read a story stop and pick up another story wheni felt up to it.each story has a HEA and is complete no cliff bangers.

He disfrutado enormemente de este libro porque vas viendo crecer a dos amigas, encontr�ndose y apart�ndose, busc�ndose y perdi�ndose a ratos. En un entorno ciertamente duro, pero con dos personalidades que se desarrollan cada una a su manera, cada una en su camino, y ambas intentando no ser aplastadas por las circunstancias que las rodean. La escritora es capaz de contarlo todo desde ellas, pero tambi�n desde los otros, desde lo que ellas piensan, pero tambi�n desde lo que ocurre; describiendo a dos chicas que se van haciendo mayores, pero al mismo tiempo cuenta c�mo cambia un vecindario y c�mo el barrio forma parte y se aparta de la ciudad. Es un libro muy recomendable.

Great reference for beginners!

I had purchased this book a few months ago through another site and it has been great. This is by no means an exhaustive atlas, but a very practical and straightforward starter book. I would definitely recommend this for inexperienced practitioners who are starting to use ultrasound for guided injections. The layout of the book and photos make it an easy book to reference. This is a good companion to a more comprehensive atlas.

Desperate to boost margins, Pete makes a sales call to the local Natural Foods grocery store, where he is amazed by "how clean and fresh, warm and welcoming the store was," by the cheerfulness of the employees, and by charismatic store manager Mike, who expounds legendary Natural Foods founder Glen Goodwill's philosophy of putting quality before profit. "Mike...I need help," Pete sobs, in the throes of a conversion experience, "tell me what I can do to make quality a part of our culture." He learns to empower his workers, listen to customers and obsessively measure every detail of production processes with an eye to continuous improvement. A good inspirational work/starting point.

I'm sure that this book will get some very enthusiastic reviews (which I've already seen), as well as some reviews saying, essentially, "Where's the beef?" And, in the end, both are going to be right.

This book is 100 pages, double-spaced, and about the size of my outstretched hand. Obviously, it can't be a definitive textbook on how to make dramatic changes in the workplace. What it does (quite successfully in my opinion) is to open one's eyes, and inspire the reader to see where change is needed. Basically, it advocates the opinion that many US companies have focused on their own "bottom line", or on "making a splash", without actually going to the consumer, finding what their very BASIC needs are, and focusing on meeting the need. (A prime example from the book - a dealership, for the first time, gathered disgruntled former customers in a focus group. They asked the customers about all of the "perks" they offered - pickup/dropoff service, fancy keychains, donuts/coffee... and the customers all liked the changes. In exasperation, the owners asked why they didn't return -- and finally heard that they had brought their car to the dealership several times, and the car wasn't fixed.)

Of course, this book can't answer every question. For example, the primary "story" focuses on an ice cream company who needs to get their product into a "Natural Foods" chain - If the "target" was getting into Wal-Mart, would the definition of "quality" change? What do you do with employees who don't "catch the spirit" in light of employment law/unemployment insurance? However, it is a great inspirational piece - and I look forward to reading other books in order to answer those remaining questions.
