Robert Hazen is has a phenomenal ability to bring science to an understandable level. This is a very important book that discusses the need for educated people to be scientifically literate. With the war on science currently raging in our nation, books such as this are more important than ever.

I Thought I Was Scientifically Literate, But Then...

I recently participated in a 50-question science literacy survey and, after scoring 62%, realized I wasn't half the science geek I thought I was. It was a sad day.

Fortunately, there's a cure! I realized that I either didn't know (or had forgotten since school) many of the fundamental principles of science. Determined to improve my literacy, I found this book and, given the generally high reviews, opted to give it a read.

Yes! Science Matters is exactly what I was looking for. It easily restored my understanding of general science topics. There is much in the book I'd previously learned, or known, but had simply forgotten over time. In this regard, the book served as an excellent refresher for material I haven't given much thought to since high school. Additionally, there was plenty of material I simply wasn't aware of, and absorbed eagerly and easily from this book.

If you've ever turned on a light switch, watched the light come on, and said to yourself, "Huh, I wonder how that works?" If you've ever wondered why the Sun shines, why the sky is blue, how nuclear power is generated, why iron rusts, and what all this "quantum" shenanigans is about - read this book. When you're done, go back and re-read some of the news articles about the activities at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, or current discussions about global climate change. You'll find your understanding dramatically improved.

Required reading!

Education unfortunately had decided that science does not matter. Dr. Hazen provides us with reasons to the contrary. Civilizations would certainly not have advanced to where we are today if science was put on a back shelf. And we run the risk of falling behind if students' curiosity is not perked. Dr. Hazen describing the threads of science clearly should incentivize us all to return to the fore and bring back science to mainstream education.

The bodhisattva, however, postpones nirvana out of compassion for others, vowing to help them until they are able to make the journey. Like Christian saints, bodhisattvas mediate between human and divine realms; they often work miracles, and much like patron saints they have areas of special interest or competence. A mostly legendary figure regarded as a protector of children and the weak as well as a healer, Jizo Bodhisattva is widely revered. Bays, a pediatrician specializing in child-abuse prevention and a Zen priest who heads the Larch Mountain Zen Center in Oregon, presents a clear and intelligent portrait of Jizo. Displaying a gift for communicating emotions, she also shares how that figure has affected her personal experiences with children and helped her deal with collective pain. Taking the Mountain to the Marketplace

Jan Chozen Bays Roshi's new book Jizo Bodhisattva, Modern Healing & Traditional Buddhist Practice shows many sides to the complex character of this modern western Zen Teacher. This Book will also aquaint many western readers with Jizo Bohdisattva, the Japanese interpretation of Quan Yin (the chinese goddess of good fortune.) This book contains a wonderful blend of interesting scholarly work, heart opening personal experience and inspiration from some of the grittier aspects of zen practice. Far from being a remote monastic, Chozen Roshi has "taken the mountain to the market place," and as this book clearly demonstrates, all those who have been touched by her practice have benefited. From her compassionate listening to the victims of sexual abuse, to her one on one training interviews with her students, Chozen Roshi's inspiration truly makes her a living bodhisattva.
Cultivating the same qualities that mystics throughout the ages have taught, these stories of Jizo demonstrate the value of selflessness, compassionate action and fearlessness. Jizo Bodhisattva is the showing of the way, the support we need to do it ourselves, the compassionate voice in our heart and in the heart of all things. Business Law: Principles, Cases, and Policy, Fifth Edition, is a comprehensive introduction to the legal principles governing business, the legal system within which business operates, and the role of government in regulating business conduct.

Key Features

The text is designed to provide complete substantive business law coverage, coupled with the flexibility to adapt to the needs of many different educational institutions, their teachers, and students. Specifically, this text is written and organized not only to reinforce and supplement principles developed in the classroom, but also to permit teachers with limited lecture or class discussion time to cover topics through readings assigned from the text.

2. The organization of the book (59 chapters organized into 9 parts) leads the reader logically through each subject by starting with basic definitions, concepts, and principles. This approach minimizes confusion, allows the teacher to choose the level of coverage, and permits efficient coverage of detailed topics.

3. To enhance student understanding of complex topics, hypothetical examples and textual discussion of actual cases are used throughout the text to illustrate legal principles. • Expanded discussion of requirements and output contracts under S2-306 of the Uniform Commercial Code (Chapter 16).
• Expanded coverage of government regulation of credit (Chapter 28).
• Expanded coverage of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (Chapter 29).
• Complete revision of the secured transactions material to reflect changes made by the 2000 revision of Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code (Chapters 31-32).
• New coverage of Uniform Prudent Investor Act (Chapter 39).
• Rewritten principal and income allocation material based upon the Revised Uniform Principal and Income Act (1997)(Chapter 39).
• Expanded coverage of limited liability partnerships based on the 1997 Limited Liability Partnership Amendments to the Revised Uniform Partnership Act (Chapter 43).
• Updated corporations material reflecting recent amendments to the Revised Model Business Corporation Act (Chapters 45-48).

3. New cases—forty-nine new cases have been added to improve and update the case coverage. As a result, over one-fourth of the cases in the text are new to this edition.

4. Glossary—The glossary has been updated, revised and expanded to include new terms and additional cross references to definitions of related terms.

5. Statutory appendices—The statutory appendices have been thoroughly revised to include amendments to the Uniform Commercial Code through 2000, the Revised Uniform Partnership Act as amended in 1997, and amendments to the Revised Model Business Corporation Act (1984) through May 2001.

1. Constitutional Framework of Government Regulation of Business: Chapter 4, The Constitution and Business Regulation, explains the constitutional framework of government regulation of business. This chapter provides the background for the detailed coverage of securities regulation, antitrust law, employment and labor law, and environmental law contained in Part Eight of the text (Government Regulation of Business, Chapters 49-55).

2. Property and the UCC: Chapter 6, Introduction to Property and the Uniform Commercial Code, discusses property and the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), topics important to a complete understanding of the comprehensive contracts, sales, negotiable instruments, debtor-creditor, and property coverage in Parts Two through Six of the text (Chapters 7-39).

Pedagogical Aids

Each chapter begins with a listing of major topics and concludes with a summary of the principles covered in the chapter. Legal case excerpts are integrated into the chapters and questions and problems follow each chapter. Additional pedagogical aids include:

1. Cases are chosen to illustrate and reinforce legal concepts discussed in the text. Some cases supplement textual material by explaining or developing the history or rationale for a legal principle. Cases have been edited to retain the court's reasoning and policy and the court's application of its holding to the facts of the case. The facts are summarized in sufficient detail to give the reader a clear understanding of the events underlying the controversy. These features facilitate using the cases for class discussion and promote student understanding. The cases represent a mix of classic and recent cases and are drawn from both the state and federal court systems.

2. Within chapters, key terms and concepts are boldfaced where defined or first discussed and compiled in a list at the end of the chapter. In addition, key terms are defined in the author-prepared glossary that contains 1,178 entries and hundreds of definitional and statutory cross-references.

3. At the end of each chapter are a series of questions and problems. Some of the questions review the concepts discussed in the text, while others expand the focus to address related subjects or issues not covered in the text. In many instances, the questions are based on actual court cases.

4. A guide to reading the legal case excerpts presented in the text follows the preface.

5. Statutory appendices, a glossary, a table of cases, and a subject index are included at the end of the text.

99.99% of everything you'll ever need to know

Words cannot accurately describe just how awesome this book is. I thought the 4th edition was as complete as it could be, but THE ROSZ has certainly outdone himself here. His moving storyline protraying Joe Doaks in various legal situations along with landmark cases make for an easy, yet entertaining read. This book does for education what Leftkowitz v. GMSS (MN App. 1957) does for general contract law. Roszkowski brings the law to life in a way otherwise thought impossible. He must have a huge following in the law community. Any serious student must add this book to their library.

Best book yet on the subject I have read

To me this was the most practical and readable book on Sustainability I have read to date.
It has been a couple of years since I read the book now, but I still remember and
recommend it to others. I would add though, that after reading "Deep Green Resistance"
I question the use of the term sustainable - and now believe it is used way too much.

World-Renowned Master Provides Training Manuals

Anthony Frisell, world-renowned teacher of voice for singers wishing to pursue careers in the field of international opera, has updated and reissued his three voice manuals: The Tenor Voice, The Soprano Voice and The Baritone Voice. They are intense, in depth and completely responsive to those individuals who wish beginning and advanced training for a serious career. My review is geared toward The Soprano Voice, however, the basic concepts are the same for all three voices.

For far too many individuals who surround themselves with music and perhaps even learn to imitate some of today's stars, they begin to consider a singing career. While reality shows abound implying that there is an easy path to success, this is just not true. The professional singer must be trained, practice and learn to protect their new voice!

To find the path to success, Frisell first explains the "Mental Image Approach." That is, "all vocal exercises must be indirectly applied, through mental concepts." (p. 7) The beginner then realizes what is expected to attain professional status. It was not at all surprising to me that even though I've been singing in various groups most of my life that I had never learned to sing correctly. Learning and maintaining vocal standards is a lifetime study in a professional environment and by a master!

There are fixed rules that form the correct mental image. Grand opera began in Italy and the first rule requires that all vowel sounds, in order to ensure singer communication to her audience, must ensure purity of vowels. Specifically, "each of the five Classic Italian vowels, u (oo) i (ee), e (eh), o (oh), and a (ah), as pronounced by native Italians, must be mastered in their purest form throughout the entire voice range." (p. 8)

The next fixed rule applies to Control for without control our voices are unreliable. The book covers breath-force dynamics, range, flexibility and shading of tones--all results of control.

There is also a requirement that professional singers must become familiar with the rudiments of music and the ability to play a musical instrument, preferably the piano. Additionally, it is necessary to learn several foreign languages.

For many of us, we do not understand how and why we can reach some notes sometimes, but not at others. This is simply explained by the requirement to identify the vocal registers for the individual. Frisell notes that "to master the art of refined singing one must know the function of the two vocal registers and fully develop them, so they function together as a single unit of quality and strength." (p. 11) This is not easily done. However, Frisell effectively takes each of the issues in this process, identifies and explains them, and then proceeds to illustrate how the single unit is developed.

Using a keyboard illustration, the breaks for females are identified. The lower register are those that come from the "chest voice" while the upper range is the "head voice." A ruling principle is provided because there is constant antagonism between these registers. "The conflicting muscular responses that occur, between the two vocal registers, when attempting to produce pure, superior vocal tone, represent the natural responses to the energy of the motor force (breath tension) being applied to the muscles of both registers." (p. 16).

For an individual to advance from routine singing to a professional, there are years of muscular control development through exercises, practice, and by listening and studying those professionals already proficient in opera. This manual takes you through the mechanics of this study and provides an outstanding array of exercises, detailed illustrations of where the sound should be located, how the tongue and throat are affected, etc.

Frisell has provided "a personal guide to acquiring a superior singing technique." Indeed, the only thing lacking is that Frisell is not there, helping the individual in this effort. This is a must-read for serious students of voice. As a final contribution, Frisell has included a copy of a recent article entitled, "Is There an "American School" of classic voice training? If so--has it failed American singers?"

By the way, the author gives master classes and is located in New York City. In my opinion, only very serious students need apply! This man will either accept you as a potential great singer...or you will come to know the answer to the question he poses in the above article.

It worked for me

I read Anthony Frisell's book Tenor Voice: A Manual for Training the Voice, and even though I am a baritone, I followed his recommendations, and it worked for me. Took about two years, and some scary moments along the way, as the musculature in my voice redeveloped, but I can sing now!

I also looked at some online excerpts from Baritone Voice by the same author, and realized the essential information is the same in both books.

There is also a very informative review above of Mr. Frisell's The Soprano Voice that you should read if you are interested in any of these books.

The same evening I picked up this book, I was in tears over my life-long struggles with my body. I had just weighed myself for the millionth time that week, and could not understand how I was not losing more weight after depriving myself and working out like a madwoman. I wasn't happy. After reading this book, my life became a journey of finding my true beauty and health by listening to my body and making choices that aligned with my happiness. Carmela helps you shift your awareness from the external to the internal-where real change happens. If I hated myself after eating a cookie (or two), my body was going to respond to this attitude. Am I going to feel happy running 10 miles, when maybe my body prefers another form of movement? Carmela taught me how to listen to what my body was truly calling out for: Happiness. When I listened to my body, it called out for healthy fuel and movement, not sugar and torture. My body loves dancing, so I now practice movement that aligns with this desire-and I've lost weight! It is about living a congruent life with our thoughts and actions. Our body will thank us when we give it what it really wants and needs. Our body will respond in a beautiful way when we gift it happiness. When we nourish our spirit, we nourish our body. It makes sense, doesn't it? Buy this book! Clear your shelves of all other diet and exercise shoulda', coulda', woulda' books and start living in alignment with your heart and body! Amazing & True Principles

I never had a weight problem until my late teens when I started obsessing over diets and workouts. Before that time, I used exercise for fun (never for worrying about “burning” calories or any of that nonsense), ate whatever I felt like eating without giving it a second thought, and as a result, stayed slim and healthy effortlessly. Carmela has been helping me move back to this natural state of well-being that I used to thrive on before the media, our culture, and all these man-made beliefs about food and exercise invaded my state of being.
In the beginning it can be hard to believe that our weight is not solely dictated by how much we eat or exercise and we get stuck on the diet and exercise “teeter-totter.” One of the first things that Happy Calories taught me is to look at my own body history rather than researching the latest trendy diet or workout program to find the truth. Carmela taught me to look within myself and see my own patterns. I was reminded that whenever I was happy and calm about my body, food, and exercise choices, it always seemed to take care of itself and release any excess weight. On the contrary, the more I stressed and worried about getting fat, the faster I would pack on the pounds, even with my perfect, calorie- controlled organic diet and regular workouts.
Carmela has helped me realize that my body is my friend and that I need to build a relationship with it. One of my first realizations that Happy Calories was the truth was that when I worked out when my body craved it and rested when my body needed it, I had amazing workouts and felt so much better.
One of the most important things Carmela has taught me is that it’s not about letting go of the dream of having your ideal body- it’s letting go of the pain of wanting to lose weight. Once I realized that, I instantly felt lighter. And YES! I have lost weight :) Now when I look in the mirror I see more and more of what I want to look like. Innovative new perspective on successful diet and exercise.

Happy Calories Don't Count brings new light to the limitations of the calories in/calories out concept of weight loss. Carmela Ramaglia shares the experiences that led her to rethink what makes an effective long term solution to getting (and keeping) the body you've always wanted. Instead of obsessing over what others stress as "the right kind" of food and exercise, she encourages a deep connection with your body and personal state of being. Carmela states that we only want anything because we think having it will make us happy. She makes a strong case that people who are miserable obsessing over counting calories and worrying about the right kind of exercise will get only limited results and ultimately quit altogether. Happy Calories Don't Count outlines an approach that removes the painful association many of us have to diet and exercise and introduces a simple steering method to keep us joyfully connected to our bodies. One that will perpetually improve our body, our state of being, and the pleasure of being alive. Her own painful experiences that led to her discovering this new paradigm make it altogether more satisfying that she bring this message to anyone struggling with body issues. I think anyone who has not found results in their own weight loss efforts will find Happy Calories Don't Count inspiring, thought provoking, and the first step to fundamentally changing the way they relate to food and exercise. It changed mine.
