About the Author
Jonathan Berk is the A.P. Giannini Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before coming to Stanford, he was the Sylvan Coleman Professor of Finance at Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to earning his Ph.D., he worked as an Associate at Goldman Sachs (where his education in finance really began).

Professor Berk’s research interests in finance include corporate valuation, capital structure, mutual funds, asset pricing, experimental economics, and labor economics. His work has won a number of research awards including the TIAA-CREF Paul A. Samuelson Award, the Smith Breeden Prize, Best Paper of the Year in The Review of Financial Studies, and the FAME Research Prize. His paper, “A Critique of Size-Related Anomalies,” was selected as one of the two best papers ever published in The Review of Financial Studies. In recognition of his influence on the practice of finance he has received the Bernstein-Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award, the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence, and the Roger F. Murray Prize. He served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance for eight years, is currently an Academic Director of the Financial Management Association, and is a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Professor Berk is married, with two daughters, and is an avid skier and biker.

Peter DeMarzo is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He currently teaches MBA and Ph.D. courses in Corporate Finance and Financial Modeling. In addition to his experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Professor DeMarzo has taught at the Haas School of Business and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Professor DeMarzo received the Sloan Teaching Excellence Award at Stanford in 2004 and 2006, and the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley in 1998. Professor DeMarzo has served as an Associate Editor for The Review of Financial Studies, Financial Management, and the B.E. Journals in Economic Analysis and Policy, as well as a Director of the American Finance Association. He has served as Vice President and is currently President-elect of the Western Finance Association. Professor DeMarzo’s research is in the area of corporate finance, asset securitization, and contracting, as well as market structure and regulation. His recent work has examined issues of the optimal design of contracts and securities, the regulation of insider trading and broker-dealers, and the influence of information asymmetries on corporate investment. He has received numerous awards including the Western Finance Association Corporate Finance Award and the Barclays Global Investors/Michael Brennan best-paper award from The Review of Financial Studies.

Professor DeMarzo was born in Whitestone, New York, and is married with three boys. He and his family enjoy hiking, biking, and skiing.

it's difficullt to learn how to use server manager library in you c++ application

I want to use paraview's server manager library to add parallel capability into my C++ application, and I thought this book might be the only source I can use to learn that. I found the book helped me to understand the architecture of server manager, but it does not provide a complete Hello World type program to get me started. after spending quite some time in studying the book, I'm still not able to write a most simple C++ program to use server manager library.

Ben Barrack is a superb investigative radio reporter who digs beyond the headlines. This book features ten of his best investigations, revealing things you never knew about major news stories and events. Little more than a theory book

This book is a theory book and little more than a recapitulation of the Oracle documentation and HOWTO documents provided on metalink. There are some helpful sections on RAC performance and tuning which add some value but there is simply too much filler, including the first five chapters, that contains little more than the ABCs of Oracle and fundamental OS principles.

There are a number of exciting and provocative areas for RAC research which are occurring in SUN, HP, and LINUX laboratories, focused on scalability with topspin infiniband and scaling the cluster above 4 nodes. Some of this research is coming into view with the new TCP-H numbers. Little mention of this in the text. How to scale RAC clusters by expanding the number of interconnects is not addresses or quantitized. Use of network storage and NetApps with NFS over IP or with iSCSI is not addressed. Although it is mentioned that Oracle packages its own clusterware and file sharing tools, there is no in-depth analysis of why other tools such as SunCluster, Veritas Storage Foundation suite or RehHat clustered file system might not have superior methods for data protection, performance, or usability. None of the problem areas for installation or configuration are addressed( there are many problem areas ) beyond the simple textbook installation. No mention of the new Opteron systems using Red Hat 3, 64 bit operating systems with 64 bit versions of Oracle 10g are explored. This is an important new area which SUN, HP and other vendors are providing cost/performance effective, scalable architectures when married with infiniband.

In all fairness to Mr Ault, RAC is a complex animal with adjunct 3rd party hardware and software components which are changing all the time and keeping up with the new technologies is daunting. Still, the author adds no substantial value to those who want to go beyond simple hand-waving into implementation. This is where the the text falls down.

Best and first book on RAC!!!

I own all of the books on Oracle Real Application clusters which is one of the most challenging areas within Oracle database technology. What I like about this book is that it covers a broad area of technology including hardware, software and design components on how to implement a RAC cluster. The author is a known expert in the Oracle field and his brilliant insights shows in this wonderful book. In particular, I like the coverage of hardware design issues and failover with a RAC cluster. There are also nicely referenced sections on topics that one can use to lookup on Metalink. To critics of the book, I am surprised- it is not simply a rehash of metalink rather a deep coverage of the challenges with building and maintaining a RAC environment.

Quite good

Oracle RAC and Grid is very complicated and I have purchased every Oracle book on the subject with this one being the clear winner. The problem with Grid is that every installation is completely different and it is very hard to find a book that give operating system and disk specific configuration tips. This is a huge book and not everything will apply to you but the authors have done an excellent job in explaining how to succeed with clustered technology.

What will you look at (or image) with your telescope tonight?

The face of amateur astronomy has changed a lot in the past 28 years since this book was printed. The people who might still wish to get their hands on it are few and far between. We're downright dinosaurs. In fact, if you're going to try and get your own copy now, it's going to have to be a used one. But that's okay. A lot of these ended up in the rarely-browsed shelves of university libraries. Other than that "old" smell, a used copy of this book is likely to be in good shape, as was the one I purchased recently.

But who'd even want to buy this thing? It's out-dated, washed up, and (OMG!) it's astronomical data in "book form"! What a relic! If you even came across one of these in the past, you probably put it back on the shelf because it's just a bunch of numbers. Page after page of thousands of New General Catalog objects. Not pretty pictures like you'll see in the astro magazines. Not poetic descriptions like you'll read in Burnham's Handbooks. Just the numbers, the equatorial coordinates, and blah, blah, blah.

Are we done here?

Hold on! There are some things to be said in favor of this book, believe it or not! And, yes, even in this age of free planetarium software, Go-To telescopes with built-in databases, and when just about anything you can think to search for is downloadable from the internet. I ain't gonna lie. You can download the NGC objects in a text file that's so much more useful on your tablet or PC than printed in this book. Especially if you're a programmer. You can produce all sorts of personalized lists from the data crammed into those computer files. Flipping pages in a book is, well, nearly useless, compared to that.

But if you can write your own programs, why are you looking at a review of this book? Yeah, I thought so! You're the old-fashioned type. You may have a modern telescope, but you probably still look through the ol' eyepiece, don't you? You're not one of these kids with an expensive 102 mm APO, taking 30-hour exposures of large emission nebulae, are you? They wouldn't be interested in this book. They've got a tiny list of maybe 30 or fewer objects that are big enough to fill their giant fields of view. No, you're the one who's out there at the star parties, wielding a giant 22-inch dobsonian, checking off faint-fuzzies like they're going out of style. Just you and your old Uranometria star atlases. You're looking at more targets in a single night than those kids will image in their entire lives. You are the one who really should be ordering this book!

Oh, but you don't necessarily have to be the old- or new-fashioned dobsonian type. Maybe you've got one of these Go-To SCT's. Maybe you're the one who likes making a sketch of all your targets. But what have you got? A hand paddle with a bunch of buttons on it. You can throw any combination of 4 digits after the letters N-G-C and press "Enter" and the scope will either zoom off and point at the object for you, or else it will give you the dreaded "Below the horizon" message. But what is that NGC object you're typing in? Where is it? And what do you expect to see when you find it? Is NGC 7332 even worth looking at through the eyepiece? Oh, you're THAT guy, are you? Well, you're a candidate for this book, too.

There are some amateur astronomers who know a thing or two about a thing or two, and there others that just pack their scopes into their vehicles and head off to the dark-sky country. They arrive at their observing site, spend some time getting everything set up, and then the sky gets dark and they wonder what in the world they're going to look at tonight. Oh, you're that guy, are you? Congratulations! You're a candidate, too!

Here's the beauty of this little gem. Let's say you're out there with your big dob and the constellation Pegasus is on the meridian. You know there's a lot of beasties to look at in Pegasus. So what time is it? No, not the time on your Apple watch! And not universal time. I'm talkin' about your local sidereal time (LST). Check your star chart. You see that vertical line there to the right of Alpheratz that's labeled 0h? If Alpheratz is on your meridian, its right ascension is your LST. That's your star time! Now flip open your NGC 2000.0 catalog and find the pages that cover 0h of right ascension. See? I knew you were good at math! The zero hour is right in front of the book. You don't even have to look at the page numbers! Now take a look at all those objects on those pages. It's something like 10 pages of objects, all lined up at the zero hour. If you draw a line from Alpheratz down through Algenib, and just steer your telescope along that line, from celestial north to celestial south, you'll sweep up all of those objects.

Okay. Curb your enthusiasm a bit. Some of those objects will, no doubt, be below your southern horizon, if you live in the northern hemisphere (below your northern horizon if you live in the southern hemisphere). And some of them are going to be really hard to see. But that's the other beauty of this book. The descriptions! Those first roughly 15 pages that the other reviewer wrote about have some handy information in them. There's a list of Messier objects with their corresponding NGC numbers. There's also a list of constellations with a count of how many NGC and IC objects are in them. Cool! But then there's a table that explains the Dreyer abbreviations. That's where things get really useful!

Take galaxy NGC 81, for instance. Before you get all excited about looking at it with your telescope, look over at the description column. See that "eeF"? The table on page xiv explains that "ee" means "most extremely" and "F" means "faint." Good luck with that target! Especially if you're using a small scope. But no matter. There are thousands of other objects to choose from. Why not look for the objects that have a "pB" in the description instead? Yeah, you're good at the letters game too, aren't you? I probably don't even have to tell you what pB means. And I'll give you a hint: it's not lead!

And here's a common scenario. You're out there with your big scope and Uranometria charts looking for galaxies, but all of the galaxy symbols are the same size. Ain't that a kick? One galaxy looks good in the eyepiece, but the one nearby with the same-sized symbol on the chart is nearly impossible to detect. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to get a quick description of all those galaxies, so you know what to expect before you waste your time trying to find them? The NGC 2000.0 catalog can help you make those decisions. And if you're going to lug your Uranometria Volumes I and II out there, and set up a card table with a red flashlight, extra eyepieces, barlows, and all those other amateur astronomer tools, the NGC 2000.0 catalog isn't much more weight or fuss to include with all the rest.

What? You don't like the fact that the NGC objects are not listed in numerical order? Why in the world do they have to be arranged by right ascension? What a pain! Wait a minute! No, that's actually not a problem for you, is it, Mr. or Ms. Stargazer? One solution for looking them up is to note the R.A. of your object in the Uranometria chart you have open. But there's also the easy button! Yeah, in the back of the NGC 2000.0 catalog, there's a whole 'nother index, in numerical order. You simply look at the R.A. of the object and then flip back through the tables to find its info.

Let's use NGC 81 as an example again. On page 243 you'll see that NGC 81 is found at 0h 21.2m of right ascension. Breeze back to the beginning of the book and look at the right ascension column. There are only 4 objects with an R.A. of 0h 21.2m. Not too hard to narrow it down, eh?

Back to that question, though, why would they be arranged by right ascension? Well, let's face it. When you want the sharpest and best view of any celestial object, where are you going to get that? Life is good or so thought high school teacher Kathryn Lyons. Her beloved husband Jack, a trans-Atlantic pilot, and Kathryn have shared a strong relationship over the years they have been together. Their teenage daughter Mattie is intelligent and loving though a bit too independent as fifteen-year old girls seem to be, at least with their moms. However, her happy family lifestyle explodes into pieces when Jack's plane blows up while in the air ten miles from Ireland.
Already struggling with grief, Kathryn is stunned by the incessant questions about Jack, their marriage, and even Mattie's personal life. Rumors abound that Jack lived a secret life. Soon the media accuses Jack of pilot error and the flight investigators believe he committed suicide. After finding some inexplicable notes in their home, Kathryn is unable to sit idle as her past and her spouse seem to have their history rewritten so she begins her own inquiries. As she searches into Jack's past with the help of union official Robert Hart, Kathryn wonders exactly who her husband truly was?
THE PILOT'S WIFE is an SST-paced story line that takes the reader along for an intriguing ride. Kathryn is an interesting character struggling with what she learns about the husband she never knew. Robert adds little to the plot beyond informing the widow of the tragedy. He adds an unnecessary betrayal and romantic subplot that takes the audience on a inclement weather detour. However, when Ann Shreve's novel stays with Kathryn's revelations about Jack, the story becomes a great thriller worth reading.

And she didn't disappoint me there. Anita takes you on a journey through a woman's self-discovery as she struggles with her husband's death and the reality that she didn't know him like she thought she did. It is a portrayal of a strong woman who sets out to learn who her husband really was ~~ while at the same time working to protect her daughter and helping her through this trying time as well as exploring her self-realization.
It is a quick read as well as an engrossing one. Though the book doesn't stir up lots of debates like Oprah's other selections, the topic of adultery still hits too close to home. However, it is interesting to see how Kathryn deals with it during her grieving process and comes to the realization that none of us really know another person. This book may sound depressing, but it really isn't. You have to read between the lines to see that there is a gift of hope that Anita was trying to share with her readers as you grow along with Kathryn on her journey.

A Book for Real People in the Real World

"The Pilot's Wife" was a haunting, yet realistic tale. I usually read at night, yet I found it hard to read this particular book right before going to sleep. The book seemed slow going at first, but in the end, your patience will be awarded. I will admit that the story line was somewhat disturbing, yet in a good way. Can you ever really know you know someone? So many times, it seems that couples enter into relationships expecting their passion to one day subside. This idea has been accepted as normal in today's society. Yet, Kathryn, the main character learns that allowing physical, emotional and intellectual intimacy to fade in her marriage was a grave mistake. I am currently engaged and, if anything, I learned from the book the value of honesty, trust, openess and, overall, reality. There are no fairy tale marriages or relationships. However, accepting this fact and living in the light of the truth will free your soul. In the end, Katherine learned about her mistakes, as well as her husband's, and we can all learn through this awesome novel about the realities of love and loss.

Liked it even with some flaws

The other reviews bring up valid points, but I still ended up liking the books. Brianna didn't really add anything other than making me angry. Thad went backwards emotionally. Staffbro goes from being a helpful, if snarky, helper to an irritating liability. There was one point when Thad blows a guy through a wall for being a dick, then he goes right back to being a pushover. I was invested enough to keep going, though, and found the whole series worthwhile.

As to the editing issues, it is noticeable, but not as bad as I was expecting. That being said, I don't blame the author. I'm sure he's even more disappointed that he paid for a service and didn't get what he was expecting.

I'll be starting the Timeless Mage stuff next and will be reading anything else from the author.

didn't live up to expectations

I wanted to give a positive review but I just can't. Beyond the numerous editing mistakes the writing became repetitive and boring. I found myself wanting to rewrite the work myself. Read the first two books then finish the story yourself in your own mind unless you want a whinny main character who is constantly wrong being told he is wrong especially by his own staff which would have made for a better main character. Some parts are drug out to tedious standstill while other more important scenes are rushed with no satisfaction.

The story of this entire series is benign and moderately entertaining. The author did attend college? Unbelievable as his writing suggests he needs serious remedial training in spelling, grammar, syntax, etc ... I do regret purchasing these books and will not purchase anything more from this writer.
