This book is a must-read

This book gives a clear explanation of the concepts of holistic management and the science of grassland restoration. The book definitely challenges some long-held assumptions about how and why ecosystems change over time. It is a must-read for all land managers, but anyone can benefit from the concepts of holistic management.

He's the foremost expert. His interviews about thinning elephant herds and how wrong he was is amazing. He's now trying to show that we're smarter now then we ever thought we could be on this topic...nature led the way...mimicking it rarely disappoints. Simply put, he shows that humans aren't smarter than mother nature...he's stopped trying to out think nature and has since learned embrace it.

About the Author

Alan L. Smith, PhD, is associate professor of health and kinesiology at Purdue University. He is recognized internationally for his research in developmental sport and exercise psychology, serves as associate editor of the Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, and is a consulting editor of Child Development. He is a fellow of the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and is a past chair of the Sport Psychology Academy of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. He earned his PhD in exercise and movement science from the University of Oregon.

Stuart J. H. Biddle, PhD, is professor of exercise and sport psychology at Loughborough University. A recognized leader in the field of physical activity and health for young people, he has worked in the area for nearly 30 years. He is coauthor of the first textbook on exercise psychology and has delivered keynotes and other lectures in more than 20 countries. Dr. Biddle is past president of the European Federation for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity and was academic cochair of the Young and Active Project leading to national guidelines for physical activity for young people in the United Kingdom. He earned his PhD in psychology from Keele University.

[[VIDEOID:ab979535b2acea57e5f4829ba8b85dbd]] If you are a fan of the Anime or Manga by the same name ( or just someone who loves scary/creepy books ) then you definitely have to pick this book up. This novel is where it all started, and you can finally own an english translated copy in PRINT thanks to the awesome Yen Press. I thought the translation was pretty good, everything made sense to me. I didn't feel like I was missing anything. That being said, this is by far the scariest/creepiest book I have read, and I probably won't find one scarier/creepier. I have read some scary books in the past, but didn't really feel anything with those. With this book, I definitely felt creeped out if not full on scared. I actually had to keep my bedside lamp on all night because for some reason I thought it was a good idea to read in the middle of the night before I went to bed. It might not be that way for you, though. I am kinda a lightweight when it comes to scary/creepy things. But whether you're a lightweight or not, I highly recommend getting yourself a copy of this book!

First off, the artwork is absolutely beautiful. The colored pages at the start of each volume are amazing. I really enjoyed the story, it's very different than most manga I read. Page after page, I just couldn't put it down. It was so interesting, I just had to know what was going to happen. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat. You won't be disappointed with the ending. I thought I knew what was going to happen and I was completely wrong. I definitely recommend reading this manga and experience it for yourself.

Ishi stumbled into the twentieth century on the morning of August 29, 1911, when, desperate with hunger and with terror of the white murderers of his family, he was found in the corral of a slaughterhouse near Oroville, California. Finally identified as an Indian by an anthropologist, Ishi was brought to San Francisco by Professor T. T. Waterman and lived there the rest of his life under the care and protection of Alfred Kroeber and the staff of the University of California's Museum of Anthropology.

Meet the Monster....and He is Us

It isn't too common for me to start crying by the ending of a book. But this story brought me to tears. I really came to admire this reticent and dignified man, and the people who befriended him, and it saddens me to think of all the other people like Ishi who were mercilessly slaughtered. Ishi is really a representative of that hunted and slaughtered class, a class that existed right here on this California soil, and a slaughter which was perpetrated by people I thought I admired: the good old cowboy types.

This is a story of epic character (Ishi's) and epic cruelty. Please do not misunderstand me: this is not a book which has any intent of guilt-tripping anyone. But it did take me by surprise, because you can talk about slavery all day long, or the Nazis, and I feel no relation, no nexus between myself and those crimes. But, here, I felt a little weird. The degenerate conduct is very close to home, literally and figuratively. I had cowboy guns and chaps as a kid, and I pretended to shoot Indians. And that is a really pathetic thing to pretend, because Ishi was an Indian, and I've learned he was just like you and me. He and his people were rational and empathetic. There had to have been a more humane way to co-exist.

"The true ghastliness of these events is that they were carried out not by alien monsters but by people shockingly like you and me."--Karl Kroeber in the Foreword to the book written by his mother. That's exactly right. This book describes how Ishi's family and tribe was basically hunted down and exterminated right in front of his eyes as a child, in at least two major massacres and a few other lesser atrocious moments. It breaks your heart. I always thought the Indians scalped the settlers. In this book, it is the local sheriff and his gang of quasi-criminals that is scalping the Indians, including their children, in retaliation for a theft of some beans or the killing of a cow, or some other handy excuse. "No state in the Union surpassed the Golden State in systematically and shamelessly harassing, murdering, and stealing from its native inhabitants." Since I live in California, this strikes a painful chord as well. The data cited by Ms. Kroeber is compelling and I suspect unrefuted. The conduct she describes is well documented and uncontested. These Indian peoples were treated like vermin, just a little over a hundred years ago, right where your wine grapes are now growing, or nearby.

I'm perhaps unduly emphasizing negative themes. I just learned of these events, or perhaps I should say I just finally comprehended them while reading the book. They struck me out of the blue. This education about nearby and recent enormous cruelties is just a part of the reading experience, however, and isolating these events does this fantastic story no favor, and I apologize. Rest assured, this is a life-altering book, and I've mentioned only the part which shocked me in a negative way.

Ishi the man is a wonderful character, he is warmly introduced and developed here, and I can think of no character, real or fiction, which I came to care about more than Ishi. He was capable, strong, polite, free from bitterness, totally alone. His champions and protectors, Professors Kroeber and Waterman, and Dr. Popey, I came to admire and respect and envy. I loved the depictions of wild nature, and Ishi's ability to make handicrafts, a skill-set described in fabulous detail by Mrs. Kroeber. You may want to make an arrowhead or a bow based on her description. Ishi recommends Mountain Juniper for your bow-making, so heed his advice, he was master.

The writing is first-rate. Mrs. Kroeber was herself a scientist, and her book takes an artful but methodical approach to the events--both tragic and hilarious-- it describes: the way of the Indians; the way of the Yana (Ishi's tribe); the experiences Ishi endured during his hard life in the wild; the discovery of Ishi; the revelations from Ishi; the "camping trip" with Ishi in his old home territory (and his anxiousness to return to the city: he learned to love beds, toilets, stoves, towels, and the other "clever" inventions of the white man); and Ishi's demise from tuberculosis.

I am one of those people who marks up a book as I read it. My copy had virtually every page marked up by the end. This book is so thought-provoking and idea-rich on so many levels it will take me years to fully asimilate it.

One of the newspaper reviewers is quoted on the cover: "A book every American ought to read." True. And, I suspect, every American will be deeply enriched and rewarded for the effort. But the ending is still sad, when you think of what Ishi endured and how little time he had in his hard, hard life to enjoy things. I kept imagining the things I would show Ishi if I had the chance: Disneyland; a Rolling Stones concert; a Benny Hill video, lasagna, a motorcycle ride.

He only spoke about 600 English words by the end, but you will understand him very well. And, I'm confident, he will be someone you deeply respect.

This is an excellent and significant book. I have replaced it a couple of times over the years, because it doesn't always come back when lent out. This particular hardbound edition from U of California Press 1976 is the best I have owned with many more and sharper photos and at over 7x10 inches a well designed layout.
As for the context - well, this is the real life story of when the Stone Age meets the sharp edge of the Industrial Age and all the tragedy mass humanity can bring upon the land. It is also the true story of how knowledge and our better character can bridge those worlds... You won't regret this read, it stays with you.

An anthropologist on Mars

At the beginning of the 20th century a half-starved 50-year-old Indian was found in a remote farm in California. He was the last surving Yaki Indian. Before the arrival of white settlers there had been probably more than 2000 Indians of that tribe in the area. They were wiped out in less than 80 years by the diseases carried by europeans, the reduction of their natural environment and periodical retaliatory expeditions organized by band of vigilantes to revenge a stolen cow or horse or the killing of one white settler. The last surviving Yaki was lucky enough to be "adopted" by the curators of the Museum of Berkeley University. There the Indian lived happily for 5 years, working as janitor and a sort of living exhibit. The anthropologist studied him and his world, and he studied the world of whites, showing a remarkable degree of adaptability to modern American society. He was called Ishi (=man) by the staff of the museum because he always refused to say his own name. Loved by everybody and friend of everybody, he died of the tubercolosis that his natural defence did not recognize. The story was written 50 years after his death by the daughter of the museum's director through the notes of her father (she had never met Ishi). Even being a perfectly scientific book, it has the power of moving of a novel and contains a terrible caveat for the modern man.

Vocabulary builder for ESL learners.

Yes, like others say, I think this book is just for ESL learners. In the introduction of this book, it also refers this book is "for anyone from middle school age to adult". I do not think this is for highly educated native English speakers. For the learners, it might be a good vocabulary builders. Actually, I, as an adult ESL learner, like this book.

Enhance day to day communication for non-native speakers

I really like, am fond of, am partial to, this book. It is ideal for a advanced ESL speaker but it could also be useful for a less articulate native speaker.
The flaw of the book is that it has only one sample sentence for each vocabulary cluster. The list of synonyms is quite large but they don't always have exactly the same meaning (few synonyms have, for that matter) and there are no definitions so if the reader doesn't know any of the alternative words she would have to look it up in another reference/dictionary. It would be foolhardy to interchange words from the synonyms/alternatives list without first ascertaining their exact meaning, connotation and collocation.

They have a ton of words for the common word, but I feel like the majority of the words are not synonymous with each other.. They have entirely different meaning.. I think a better book is out there.

The embargo fits Einstein's definition of insanity - it has proven not to be effective, it's time to let the rhetoric go

I recently met Jay at a meeting dealing with Cuba, and was immediately impressed with his knowledge of the culture and his keen sense of how things work on the island, only to find out he had not only being doing business there for 15 years... he had co-authored a book on the topic. He was open about the fact that some chapters needed to be revised, but I found the book relatively current, meaningful - and highly informative. Things are changing so fast in the normalization of the Cuban-American "trade" relations that even if you published a book today, by July there may be a different set of rules in play... hopefully, the end of the embargo. I highly recommend this book.

As a point of reference, I was almost 10 years old when I left Cuba with my mom, dad and sister on January 6th, 1968 - the Freedom Flight generation. I adapted very quickly to my new environment. My parents were apolitical, or at least they did not dwell too much on the why we now found ourselves in Miami, they simply adopted the pragmatism of the Cuban culture and setout to make sure my sister and I had a roof over our heads, and an education. My dad was an R&D Chemist, who had worked for ESSO Standard Oil in Cuba, and an intellectual - he already was fluent in English, despite a heavy accent, while my mom was a housewife, and tended to the care of my older sister and me. At that time, the stigma of being a refugee, or "REF" as we were referred to in school was one to avoid, so I blended in, avoided the stereotype, and to some degree separated myself from the roots.

In June 2016 I did my first trip to Cuba on business, with mixed feelings. My sister recalls my dads words as we were leaving: "look back, you'll never be back" - this was true for my father and mother, both died in Miami, and never returned. I had the curiosity to see and validate the memories engraved as a 10 year-old with reality - that was an emotional roller coaster, and although I had some vivid memories (still photos), I learned that as a child, your mind amplified certain aspects, which gave me a deeper, different perspective and a better understanding on how to relate to my younger sons (I have 4, ages 5, 12, 33, and 35). So the trip piqued my interest in Cuba, now, after my second visit, I decided I want to bridge these two cultures. I read the book, as I have been doing business in Latin America for over 25 years, and for that matter around the world, and although I considered myself a citizen of the globe, I fully accepted knowing very little about the country responsible for my formative years... I consider this book is a good intro to whet my appetite, and a must read if you are unfamiliar with the culture or the history.

The Cultural aspects to me are well known, as I was raised in Cuba, and later little Havana, in a primarily Cuban family, so I found Jay's comments more relevant to me, yet Maria's comments did provide some relational insights regarding some of the Miami "old guard". One bit of data in the book I found interesting was a quote, by a Florida Congressman who touts the codifying of the embargo bill, as his greatest accomplishment, and it made me wonder... an elected official, paid by tax-payers money from the State of Florida to represent the interests of the State and its citizens... focused most of his career on a bill regarding a country outside of the jurisdiction he was elected to represent - was that the best use of "our collective" tax Dollars? Cuba matters, but a little more to some than others - relatively speaking, I've raised my boys here in the State of Florida - selfishly, Education ranks higher, despite being a Cuban-American. I can only imagine that it matter even less to a non Cuban-American, although Jay may be an exception. Look, I have inherited the same apolitical attitude as my parents, I don't know the man so I can't judge, but the effort seemed misguided and driven by personal passion. Today, with a changing demographic, where the "old guard" is no longer a majority, we need to reassess whether or not this is representative of the current citizens' view.

Jesus said He who is free of sins may cast the first stone, and no individual, or country, or religion for that matter can look back in its past and rid him or itself of some atrocities. We need to realize, after 57 plus years that Cuba is a sovereign nation. As a culture, we should know better than to think Cubans, on either side of the ocean, would yield on their believes, especially... against their will - no somos faciles - we are a PROUD people, and since birth have been taught what anyone can do, we can certainly do it better (we are told we are unlike anyone else, at least we are made to believe it) . And possibly, it is this blind pride, this characteristic that led to our current situation (on both sides). Some want a democratic Cuba, yet one of the principles of our adopted American Values is to respect others beliefs, as in freedom of speech - yet, if someone differs from our opinion, we are quick to coerce and call names, or even threaten. We need to understand the current situation, it is what it is, and leverage the commonalities that intersect transversally across the three cultures, the humane strand that bonds us as human beings.

As Americans, Cuban-Americans, let's uphold the constitution of this great nation, which took us in with open arms, and let's live by its values, as we verbally committed to do, under oath. If other countries, differ, let's respect their wishes and sovereignty to decide for themselves. Cuba and the US can benefit from normalizing its relations - we are neighbors. It's not about who is right or wrong, it's different, and we can agree to disagree, yet be "neighborly".

This is a rare find in a cookbook: A new cookbook author, writing about the foods from a tiny country that has not seen much coverage. It’s an honest endeavor and a lot of work has gone into it. It is somewhat amazing, actually, and if you are at all interested in Oman, you should consider picking up this book. I can’t imagine that you will be disappointed.

The book is written by an American female soldier who had her first glimpse of the Middle East via the first deployment into Iraq when she was in her teens. She fell in love with the area, its people, its ways, its food—it is obvious to see that in this book she has created. There is love and respect here on every page. And, oh wow!, did this girl soldier "blossom" into an articulate, knowledgeable, astute adult!

After the military, she got her college education and eventually earned her master’s degree in food studies. She specialized in Arab “foodways”. Before her first trip into Oman, she worked at Saveur magazine and traveled to the Middle East at every opportunity. So, it comes as no surprise that this book covers quite a lot of ground — you will see that also as you browse through the pages. She eventually made a trip to Oman, and her enthusiasm finally found its foundation. For a tiny country, there is a lot of detail and info in this book—and plenty of intriguing, interesting and beautiful photos. And we get to see it through the eyes of a respectful and reverent expert.

The book has a very personal flair to it, the words are written in a personable style that is pleasant and never arrogant.
There is more information and more story-telling and more explanations of dishes, than there are recipes. But the recipes that are included are important and carefully chosen—and there are plenty of them, too. One hundred titled recipes that I counted. Then there are recipes within recipes for marinades and sauces.

--Bedouin Whole Charred Fish has an ingredient list of only three items. Yet it is the technique that is important, plus it works with any whole mild-tasting saltwater fish. There is plenty to surprise and delight, and this author aims to share her knowledge and wants to teach us all.

-- loved the rice recipes. There are plenty to choose from—and it’s all about the rice and the spices, with the chunks of meat, fish, vegetables seemingly just tucked in for extra flavor and nutrients. I loved the curry recipes, too: Peppery Fish Steak Tomato Curry, two squid curries, (especially the Spicy Zanzibari Squid Curry) and a coconut shrimp curry.

--The Slow-Cooked Coconut Beans is worth trying. It is made with kidney beans, tomatoes, garlic, onions, coconut milk and Scotch bonnet chiles. There is a Coconut Creamed Spinach with tomato, onions, serrano chile, coconut milk and cumin.

--There are surprising sweets and wonderful beverages to sip.

A beautiful depiction of Oman's food and culture

The Food of Oman shows the rich and exotic flavor in the dishes from the Middle East as well as the beauty of architecture and culture. The author has been in Oman many times and has focused her education toward this area of the world from which a passion developed and she has expressed in this collection of recipes and photos.

The recipes show a culture that uses more chicken, lamb and fish for their main dishes with servings of rice and flat breads to accompany. There are some beef dishes, but it doesn’t seem to be the favorite. They also use lots of spices but you can find extremes here from recipes that pair cilantro and lime with fish to more spicy combinations. The recipes show the use of fresh herbs over dried which I feel is important to their dish but also shows a glimpse of their daily life in that fresh is more available than what dried may be. The bread recipes in this book are predominately flat breads with an exception of the Sweet Cardamom Zanzibari Fried Bread. The photos of some of these dishes will have your mouth watering!

One section for recipes used for between meals snacking showed a lot of fried option which surprised me because I look at snacks as something light instead of heavily fried. Some of these dishes were Fried Potato-Chile Puffs, fried triangle pastries stuffed with ground chicken, fried chicken and meat dumplings. I would love to try a few of these but I think I will use them as a meal instead of a snack.

The dessert section was interesting to me because as American’s we have an awesome sweet tooth and that shows in our decant desserts. Oman has desserts that are more subdued in comparison. Their sweeteners are dates, sesame seeds, coconut and coconut cream, and surprisingly vermicelli.
If you are an adventurous cook or simply one who loves to try to new ideas, this is quite possibly a cook book you should consider. The author has done a wonderful job with her recipe selection, photos and cultural insights. The love the author has for this country shines in her work.

just superb

This is not just a cookbook but a trip into the lives and places of Oman. Over the years I have read many books that were set in Oman and this book brings to life all that I imagined it to be - the people, the places the customs and not forgetting the food. It is a beautiful publications of the highest quality and the food. The recipes look simple with easy to obtain ingredients and are beautifully presented.
To me this book is like transported back in time, forget all the conflict of our time and enjoy the ride and the food.
