Why did God become a man?

The scandal of Christianity is that God -- the Almighty God who created all that is seen and unseen -- became a man. Specifically, He became a male Palestinian who lived from around 4 B.C. to around 29-30 A.D. A man who was born of a woman, who was hungry, thirsty, sleepy, tired -- everything that we do -- but without sin.

And that man who at the same time God suffered for us under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried and rose from the dead on the third day.

All of this is affirmed by orthodox Christians. The question that has been asked -- and which this book seeks to answer -- is not, "Did this all happen?," but "Why did God become man?" St. Anselm's discussion is the classic discussion of western theories of the Atonement.

A little baffling is the paucity of scripture in this book, but St. Anselm is trying to answer the question by use of reason, in the form of a dialog.

This particular translation was completed in 1903 and this is a reprint of that translation which has been out of print for some time. It's a good re-print, easy to read (the book is surprisingly short for as influential as it has been) and well-bound. The publisher has done good for all Christians by providing this printing of this book. While not simple reading, this book is not difficult for educated Christians -- lay or clergy -- to read and ponder.

Attempting to Unravel the Mystery Behind the Mystery

Anselm's Cur Deus Homo or Why Did God Become Man? is an excellent, deep theological work that attempts to unravel the mystery behind the Incarnation of God in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior. I gave this book only four out of five stars only because half of the book was letters back and forth between Anselm and people in the church and the monastery and it felt like filler to me. Despite the filler, the first 100 pages are well worth the price of the book and I recommend it to anyone who is not only interested in the "God became flesh and dwelt among us" but exploring the deep theological and philosophical aspects on the supposed free will of man versus the true and absolute free will of God.

The format is quite unique in that this is the first theological book I have read that is a discussion between two men. In this, we have Boso, a compatriot of the author's, who serves as the one inquiring about the Incarnation from a layperson's view and the unregenerate's view. And then we have Anselm, who seems to provide the answers but even more so, sharpens iron with Boso and sharpens iron with the reader.

I was pleased and fortunately to read this book after finishing Athanasius' On the Incarnation of the Word (which was a double joy to read around Christmas) and I felt like Athanasius' work serves as great, worshipful setup to this book. Athanasius lobs the pitch up and Anselm swings for the fences. If I could give the highest recommendation, it would to read On The Incarnation followed by Cur Deus Homo.

After reading, praying, processing and meditating, I would summed up the entire book in this:

In man's sinful nature, man lacks the power, ability and free will to fully live for God. However, in His divine nature, God has the power, ability and the free will to die for man so that man might fully live for God.

Harmony Restored.

In his most famous of all books, Why God Became Man, Anselm is answering the question given certain presuppositions. These include the great offence against God by mankind’s sin. Here it is significant to remember that the magnitude of the offence is not measured by the nature of the sin but by the nature of the One sinned against. Thus Anselm argues that the debt mankind owes to God for failing to give Him his due, is something that only God Himself can rectify.

God is only satisfied, hence Anselm’s theory of the Atonement, by One who is more than the sum of humanity (which could never suffice to restore God’s honor), and the One who is so “chosen” to restore the honor must by necessity command humanity’s allegiance: “The One who frees humanity from their predicament demands their obedience.” And secondly, “in order for an individual to offer an acceptable satisfaction he must be ‘all that God is not.’ ”

In Jesus Christ, the God-Man, the harmony is restored to the universe that was disrupted by Sin. Our faith and devotion in obedience to the One who sets us free is till being offered to God alone, as it is God who frees us.

The television makeover is contemporary America's fairytale, a feel-good story that ends with the resolution of the protagonist's problems and the inevitable "happily ever after." Or that's how the television mythmakers would like us to see it - the unappealing house transformed into the American dream home in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the boorish male remade into sophisticated metrosexual in Queer Eye for the Straight Guy , the ugly duckling transformed into The Swan - as stories of unhappy people changed for the better by the intervention of television networks, designers, cosmetic surgeons, exercise gurus and image consultants. Except, like fairytales, makeover television contains not-so-subtle subtexts; it is not only the lives and thoughts of the people on the shows that are reshaped, but also those of the viewers.

The women's makeover shows (The Swan, Extreme Makeover, Dr. 90210, etc.) are obvious examples. As Elizabeth Atwood Gailey points out in her essay in this collection, these shows promote an alarming female body ideal (tiny waist, large breasts, flat stomach, baby-like facial features), pathologize the normal changes in a woman's body post-childbirth so that women in their 30s and 40s are told they are supposed to recreate the body of a 20 year old, and encourage women to relate to themselves and their bodies as commodities. In another essay, Kathryn Fraser discusses how the women's makeover genre requires that "self-love... can only be achieved at the expense of self-loathing" and "the feminine self is always deficient and in need of intervention." Another essay discusses discuss how Extreme Makeover: Home Edition reinforces conservative views of the family, promotes consumerism and takes for granted that the social safety net has been removed.

Several other essays argue that makeover television reinforces the view that it is the elites of our society who are the arbiters of taste and their intervention that is needed by the working class if their lives are to be improved. This is an interesting collection providing thought-provoking insights into what is actually being made over by the television makeover. Written by academics for a largely academic audience, however, it is not an easy read, with the dense language, unfortunately, making it far less accessible than the television shows it critiques. But for those comfortable with this kind of text, it's a worthy and worthwhile collection.

ALthough this tale is to a large extent a rewriting of Balzac "le chef d'oeuvre inconnu", James mastery is already evident in this early short story. The characters are perfectly depicted as well as the atmosphere of Florence. A profound reflection on the place of art between the ideal and the real world.

OK but glaring inexcusable errors concerning Methylation's role in Histamine Intolerance.

This is an Ok book and has a lot of good useful information all in one place. As someone with histamine intolerance with gene defects that code for DAO, MAO, and HNMT finding out that turmeric blocked MAO was very useful as well as finding out exactly how Vitamin C works as an antihistamine. Her charts, while somewhat confusing are also useful. With such information in mind, as an herbalist and nutritionist, I was able to search for other herbs and supplements that also block either DAO or MAO and or other critical enzymes.

However this book also has some very glaring misinformation and leaves out some extremely important information. The most glaring error of all, and there should be no excuse anymore for anyone writing on histamine intolerance to make such an error, is that the author falsely claims that Methylation is "quackery" when it comes to histamine intolerance just because she read such on Wikipedia, and also after correctly noting that ""The HNMT [Histamine N-methytransferase] enzyme catalyzes the reaction of histamine with a methyldonor to N-methylhistamine."

If Ms. de Wild-Scholten had actually researched the full methylation and histamine pathways she would have realized that Wikipedia was totally wrong about methylation's role in histamine degradation. The HNMT enzyme is a methyltransferase enzyme which means it takes SAMe as a cofactor to work and SAMe is generated by the MAT enzyme converting the amino acid Methionine into SAMe using the cofactor Magnesium and ATP. If someone is going to write a book on histamine intolerance and then go so far as to slander Carl Pfeiffer and his ground breaking work as "Histadalia/Methylation Quackery", they had better do their homework first. If Mr. Pfeiffer was alive he could have sued Ms. de Wild-Schollen for her slander.

If someone has methylation issues such as an MTHFR defect, an MAT defect, a CBS upregulation defect etc. SAMe cannot be generated or recycled properly, or is turned into homocysteine too quickly (by the CBS upregulated enzyme) and histadalia can indeed be the result. I am homozygeous (two bad copies, one from each parent) on the gene that codes for the MAT enzyme, and have many other defects in the methyl cycle as well (including the genes that code for both critical MTHFR enzymes). In addition I am homozygeous for defective genes that code for both the critical DAO enzymes and the MAO A enzyme, and heterozygous for all my HNMT enzymes except one. The minute I took 500 mg of methionine I woke up for the first time in my life with out the blinding histamine headache I had endured every morning of my life and for half of the day every day.

Granted we know much more about how the methyl cycle works now, but such a glaring error by Ms. de Wild-Scholten in this day and age is nothing short of inexcusable.

So if you choose to purchase this book, please disregard the authors misinformation concerning Methylation.

A waste

The book is 1/3 charts, 1/3 simple text, 1/3 footnotes. The charts are practically worthless in that they are black & white, while almost every chart is keyed in color (i.e. red = mostly, green = not) If you cannot see red or green colors in this book, you cannot use the charts! The text is very simple & offers far less than what can be found in a few hours of internet searches. I was very disappointed in this book in that it offered very little in the way of explanation, and when it got to the point of "why" things happen, it reverts back to "Ask your healthcare professional." seriously? Do not wast your time/money
