I was required to read this book for a psychology class. Our accompanying assignment was to write a book review, so I think I will just paste that in here. Happy Reading :)

West views the stages of life, not as a single line, but as a tapestry. His story of Icarus and the Dragons showcases the fact that parents and teens are in completely different seasons of their lives at the same moment in time. West portrays the perspectives of parent and teenager without bias toward one or the other. The parents’ star is beginning to set, bodies and minds not as sharp and fresh as before. The teen’s star is rising, confidence and physical prowess at their peak. The parents are trying to contribute something to the next generation, while the teenage spirits cry out for self-discovery and permission to live their own lives. The interaction of these two perspectives brings turmoil and exciting moments to the journey. Comparing two different viewpoints on death, love, community, physical changes, control, dreams, and faith side by side allows the reader to see conflicts between teenagers and their parents in a new light. Parents and teens are both acting out of frustration with the changes they cannot control. Teenagers believe only what personal experience shows them to be true. They rebel against their parents’ cautionary words, unsatisfied with beliefs held in childhood. Interestingly, the Amish are aware of this phenomenon and allow Rumspringa, a time in an adolescent’s life where they are allowed to participate in the “English” or modern community. At the end of Rumspringa, the adolescent returns to pledge loyalty to the church and the Amish way of life. This stage in life is a time of both inner and outer change for both mature adults and developing adolescents.
West draws frequently on the work of Erik Erikson, calling the psychosocial stages a “well-known map” that shows the opportunities and dangers that await during each stage of life. The importance of developing a solid identity before trying to raise a child is highlighted. West looks at Erikson’s stages as guidelines for parenting, adding the Eastern philosophy of balance in all things to the mix. For example, West’s Trial of Trust corresponds to Erikson’s stage of Trust vs. Mistrust. Erikson proposes that children must develop trust in their caregivers to have a solid foundation for later stages. West adds the concept that the proper amount of mistrust protect against those who would take advantage of another. Generativity is extremely important to West. People in middle adulthood are encouraged to care for others, especially the disadvantaged, contribute to a community, to see death as part of the rhythm of nature and to concentrate on relationships. West updates Erikson’s ideas and applies them to the modern family.
West is a very engaging author. He presents the ideas of great psychologists such as Levinson, Piaget, Erikson, and Kohlberg in an easily understood context. He discusses faith without putting down any single religion. Using practical examples and mythological stories to support his assertions, he makes his point in a non-threatening way. The descriptions of the Hoffberger and Catalano families showcase the kind of support a family needs to offer its members. The children in these two families were always surrounded with role models as well as peers they could talk to about their problems. These days, therapists are paid for the emotional support that families should provide. I enjoyed reading this book very much and think that it should be used instead of the Santrock textbook as the main reading material for this class. This book is applicable to the life of every new parent, teenager, and psychology student. Even though finding this book was a little difficult due to it being out of print, I am glad that I obtained a copy.

n 1973 a young man finds unusual objects at a yard sale in the historic district of Fayetteville, Arkansas, which lead him through a series of eerie coincidences and twists and turns to the story of Leslie Stringfellow, who was born in Texas just after the conclusion of the Civil War. Leslie’s untimely death at age nineteen resulted in what his well-educated parents regarded as successful attempts to make contact with their dead son through private s�ances held nightly in their own home.

Once established, contact continued nightly for over fifteen years. With the help of their dead son, Henry Martyn and Alice Stringfellow recovered a lost inheritance, learned immediately the last words of one of their own parents when he died over a thousand miles away, and adopted and raised a two-year-old orphan girl who grew up to become an active suffragist, newspaper editor, and publicity director for the largest women’s organization of the early twentieth century.

During the years of contact with what the Stringfellows believed to be their departed son, they received thousands of s�ance messages through “automatic writing” in which the young man described his personal afterlife and provided detailed descriptions of the geography of paradise.

When Alice Stringfellow was eighty years old and widowed, she decided to write about her experiences with Leslie with the help of her adopted daughter. In 1919 the two women contacted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who read their manuscript and sent them two letters, one handwritten, encouraging them to publish it. The creator of the Sherlock Holmes stories even proposed an experiment that involved his own deceased son, Kingsley Doyle, who was killed in World War I. These letters are published here for the first time.

This book is the result of years of extensive research by Stephen Chism, associate librarian at the University of Arkansas, who was the young man at the yard sale in 1973. Chism documents the objective facts of the story and provides historical background on the widespread practice of spiritualism in the American South during the close of the nineteenth century.

Captivating

I read metaphysical books in hopes of learning something. However, when I can learn something and be entertained at the same time, as was the case with this book, it's a real treat. Reading this book was like watching a good movie. I could picture the characters, their homes, and their environment as the story unfolded. I'd have to rank it as one of the two most entertaining metaphysical books I have read - right up there with "The Boy Who Saw True."

This 2005 book is based on a 1926 book, "Leslie's Letters to His Mother," by Alice Stringfellow. That book resulted from afterlife communication received from Leslie Stringfellow, who had died in 1886, at age 19. The "letters" came by means of automatic writing through a planchette to Leslie's parents, Alice and Henry Stringfellow. Although the communications began soon after his death and continued for some 15 years, Alice's book was not published until 1926, as she did not think it would be of interest to anyone. As it was, only a hundred or so copies were published, mostly for family members.

Henry and Alice Stringfellow were no country bumpkins. Henry was a world-renowned horticulturist, having graduated from the College of William and Mary before earning graduate degrees in both theology and law. Alice was a graduate of Hunter College in New York. Leslie's death hit them hard. While visiting a medium in Galveston, they were directed by spirit to invest in a planchette - a device that holds a pencil and is moved by the communicating spirit as the hands of the two sitters rest on it. "Neither Alice nor Henry believed they had any control over the movement of the instrument," author Stephen Chism offers. "The Stringfellow's letter-writing sessions were to become a secret family ritual which lasted for over 15 years."

Chism, a librarian at the University of Arkansas, tells of the synchronistic events that led to the discovery of the 1926 book and then details his research into the history of the Stringfellow family. "As he was dying, Leslie claimed he could see light from Heaven," Chism writes. "He promised Alice that he would contact her `if such a thing were possible.'"

In 1897, Leslie encouraged his parents to adopt a child, a distant relative who had been orphaned at age two, as he felt they were too dependent on hearing from him. He wanted them to concentrate on living this life rather than constantly thinking about joining him in the next one. The child would be renamed "Lessie" and would go on to become a reporter and editor in Fayetville, Arkansas. It was Lessie who helped her mother put together their many letters into a book.

In his "letters" Leslie tells of his active life on his side of the veil. He states that he was weak when he first arrived on the other side, but he quickly regained his strength. "Here every man's home is an index of his character [on the material plane]" he informs them, pointing out that a large number of souls are stuck in the lower planes of existence. However, while he realized that there were many spheres or planes above him he informed them that he was very content. "Never doubt for a moment that this world is a thousand time better in every way than yours," Leslie continues. "When I compare even my happy life on earth with what I now have, I can but see the contrast."

Leslie's messages are consistent with messages received by other credible mediums, pointing to an evolution of the spirit through higher and higher spheres rather than a humdrum heaven and horrific hell.

It is a fascinating and captivating read. Every hospice should have several copies of this book available for its residents.

The American Spiritualist Experience

The phenomenon known as the Spiritualist movement that sprang out of the finger lake district of New York state from the area historians call the "burned over" district due to the variety of spiritual/religious epiphanies that swept the area, beginning with the Shakers, Jemima Wilkinson, Mormons and the Fox sisters among other evangelical social outbursts. What made Spiritualism the more attractive of these spiritual expressions was the progressive mindset the movement enunciated, which included abolition, feminism, humane childhood education, and dietary reform among others.
Perhaps the most significant innovation was the elevation of women within spiritialism to positions of authority, spiritual as well as temporal. This along with the Shaker movement was the first time in centuries that women held positions of power equal to that of men within a religious movement.
The other innovation with the advent of spiritualism was the shift from the "church" being a special building for religious endeavors to the American home as church. It was not unintentional that many spiritualists refer to their activities within a "home circle" down to this day. Spiritualism provided for the first democraticization of religion that appealed to the sensibilities of Jeffersonian democracy from which it sprang.
Mr. Chism has provided a great insight into this with the discovery of a family's documented automatic writing sessions initially, used to make contact with the son of the family, Leslie Stringfellow and the subsequent psychonautic communiques within the family that provided comfort, solace and intellectual stimulation on the nature of the soul and the afterlife through these alleged communications for the family.
For students of 19th century religious movements, spiritualists or students of parapsychology this book is a gift to treasure.

Truly a WONDERFUL Book, a "Must Read"....

Thoroughly enjoyable historical and spiritually uplifting book about the afterlife as told through the letters received by a mother from her deceased son over a period of 15 years. Explains the family history, how the author had a connection with the deceased through a series of odd "coincidences", and then afterlife as the young man experiences it. The book also does a wonderful job of telling the story of the history of the Spiritualist movement that is still so relevant today. This is a book every truth-seeker should own! I've read many books of this genre and this is right up there with, Thy Son Liveth: Message from a Soldier to His Mother, and that was made into a movie, A Rumor of Angels with Vanessa Redgrave. This is a most outstanding book, only too bad it is out of print! I'm hoping the author will reprint and get it into Kindle format, too.

About the Author
Col. Samuel Russ Harris, Jr., served as commander of one of the first B-29 Heavy Bombardment Groups to reach the Marinas Islands in 1944. For his courageous service, he received 11 awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Legion of Merit award and the National Defense Service Medal.

Robert A. Mann is a former member of the United States Air Force, and enjoyed a long career in the aerospace industry. The author of five books, he lives in Pahrump, Nevada.

B-29 Combat Ops from the Group CO's Perspective!

Colonel Sam Harris was the first CO of the 499th BG, commanding it from April 1944 to March 1945. Assigned to the 73rd BW, XXI Bomber Command in the Marianas, the 499th flew bombing raids over Japan beginning in November 1944. While in command of the 499th, Harris kept a diary which serves as the basis of B-29S OVER JAPAN, A GROUP COMMANDER'S DIARY, a 2011 McFarland release.

B-29S OVER JAPAN interweaves entries from Harris' diary with historical summaries of B-29 development/deployment and 73rd BW combat ops by editor Robert Mann. Since Harri's focus was on HIS Group, Mann's inserts help provide prospective and background to the basic story.

As a Group CO, Harris flew few bombing missions against Japan. Consequently, the book really focuses on the problems and challenges Harris faced in getting the 499th established and functioning as an effective B-29 bomber group. Early B-29 ops weren't successful due to incorrect tactics and B-29 technical problems. Harris' book is especially useful in revealing the problems he and other XXI BC Group COs had with their boss, General 'Possum' Hansell, in developing the B-29 as an effective bombing platform. Hansell failed to do so and was replaced by Curtis LeMay who rewrote the book on B-29 combat ops.

If you're looking for lots of 'yank-and-bank war stories,' B-29S OVER JAPAN isn't your cup of tea. Rather it's an interesting and informative inside look at how a bomber group wages war, viewed from the CO's perspective. Recommended.

Recommended piece of history for BG on Saipan

This book both held my interest as a historical account by using diaries of Colonel Harris and other air corps statistical information, as well as provided to me a bit of a the personal story of one man's view as it follows through the days of Colonel Harris' time in the Marianas. The book has a lot of references to the missions, planes and some personnel that flew out of Isley field, of which I'm very interested. It helped fill in a few blanks for me as having a family member that flew with a different bomb group; that family member being stationed on Saipan with a different BQ at the same time as Colonel Harris. I would highly recommended this book to anyone that wants to put the timeline or chronology of the various bomb groups together a bit better - there are many valuable notations and a good amount of detailed data included. Of course Colonel Harris BG is more in-depthly highlighted and noted, but the books makes reference to other groups and planes that flew the bomb runs from Saipan in 1944-45 as well. It's both a nice personal account of the days and missions, and a good reference text for those looking for related 'data'.

this book is for a specific reader

a pretty good read from the point of view of a commander. my father flew on a B-29 and it was neat to see his plane mentioned. If i didn't have that connection to this book it would not have gotten 4 stars. This book is not an easy read. Much of it is simply records of planes coming and going. and being lost. sometimes there is details, sometimes not. Also seems that part of the diary were not legible or were damaged. That being said it is a very unique record. Note it is also quite expensive for a kindle book with it's limitations of blurry and hard to read pictures/maps.

For beginners in environmental sciences, this book will be an excellent guide to different issues such as: Water, soil and atmosphere chemistry. Each chapter is well organized, and the structure of the book is quite easy to follow. If you are looking for some good introductory book for your undergraduate courses of environmental chemistry, well, this is your book. On the contrary, if what you need is a more detailed review of soil, water or air pollution, I recommend you to look out for a more advanced book in that specific matter.

Julia Elyachar studied the efforts of bankers, social scientists, ngo members, development workers, and state officials to turn the craftsmen and unemployed youth of Cairo into the vanguard of a new market society based on microenterprise. She considers these efforts in relation to the alternative notions of economic success held by craftsmen in Cairo, in which short-term financial profit is not always highly valued. Through her careful ethnography of workshop life, Elyachar explains how the traditional market practices of craftsmen are among the most vibrant modes of market life in Egypt. Long condemned as backward, these existing market practices have been seized on by social scientists and development institutions as the raw materials for experiments in “free market” expansion. Elyachar argues that the new economic value accorded to the cultural resources and social networks of the poor has fueled a broader process leading to their economic, social, and cultural dispossession.

Readable and Accurate

I have many versions of the New Testament (including origninal greek texts) and I treasure each one of them. Having several versions of the bible often allows you to find the one translation that you feel is plain enough and true to the original meaning ( I suggest a good Interlinear bible as an aid for this). However many translations often sacrifice accuracy in order to create "new" translations in "modern english" which they then market to the public as if it where the newest Soft Drink that will expand your understanding and abilities. Well this bible is different, it is very attractively typeset ( though not flashy) and it includes introductions to each book which are both concise and helpful. The translation is just wonderfull. If you want a bible that is readable and uses modern language this is it. Simple, insightfull and accurate. For example Acts 20:7 is often translated as occuring on a Sunday, which some texts go as far as translating as "the Lords Day" (which was not used to reffer to Sunday until long after the time of the apostles) even though the correct translation is Saturday evening as the T.E.V. translates it. In addition many good literal translations such as the King James series translate Hebrews 4:9 as simply "there remains therefore a "rest" for the people of God" When the word rest is Sabbatismos which should be translated as "a sabbath rest" or "a keeeping of the sabbath" rather that just rest (katapausis) which simply implies a cessation of work. Barclay's translation of Hebrews chapter 4 allows you to really follow the reasoning of the whole statement and grasp it's meaning. Overall I think that this is great translation to have, especially to use as a more readable version to supplement your reading from a more literal translation such as the KJV or NASB ect.

I am glad to vouch for this edition of the New Testament. I have many editions of the New Testament, from many editors/translators. This is my overall favorite for "readability" and balance. Some versions are more scholarly, eg, the New American Bible's thorough footnotes. This version is beautifully translated without being flowery. To the extent that I can judge, it is accurate, and, I never have found it burdensome to read. I happen to be an attorney, and, all things considered, this is the version I find most appropriate to give as a gift: it is balanced, readable and softly conveys, I believe, the intended message.

My Bedside Bible

I have many translations of the New Testament that I use for different spiritual needs. Of all of these, the Barclay translation is my favorite. Yes, I know it is not a literal word-for-word translation and I know that one man translations are open to bias. (Barclay humbly points this out himself in the introduction). However, when I want to feel the presence of the Spirit in word, I feel it with Barclay's version the easiest.
When I feel analytical, I think there are two reasons that I feel moved by the Barclay translation. First, Barclay artfully combines literal meanings (word choice and historical usage)with the contextual meaning of each passage. The second reason I choose the Barclay for my "reading" New Testament is that it is scholary in translation of the original manuscripts but highly readable in its final result. One the advantages to this one-man translation is there is a consistent clarity, simplicity and warmth throughout. When I read my Scriptures before bed each night, I sense the strong hand of the Holy Spiritin these words.

Cicero's Selected Works Revisited

A compliment to Amazon Kindle is entailed here. I got the Amazon Kindle version of the "Selected Works" of Cicero when my Penguin copy fell apart through overuse! This is the second time I have been motivated to get the Kindle version of a much read work: the other being my favorite autobiography: Ulysses S. Grant's "Personal Memoirs". Any literary work I value is henceforth going to go on Kindle: I'm through with perishable dead-tree books!

I studied Latin through high school and Cicero's letters were an eye opener because of their clear Latin. Some of the best of these letters are in this volume of Cicero's "Selected Works". Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to read the good stuff in high school Latin: Cicero's 2nd Philippic against Anthony--often considered the greatest political pamphlet of all time--was probably considered too racy for schoolboys. Instead, we were forced to read the "Aeneid." (I never want to see that damned poem again!) But I got my own kids to read the 2nd Philippic, I hope to their benefit. And there are other great essays of Cicero's in his "Selected Works." Enjoy and benefit!

The importance and relevance of Cicero

As Michael Grant explains in his introduction, Cicero's reputation has waxed and waned over the past two thousand years. That reputation was at its zenith at the time of the founding of the United States, and Cicero was like an old friend to Thomas Jefferson and the Founding Fathers. He was admired for many reasons, but perhaps the most outstanding was his concept of Natural Law, which had an enormous influence on the people who wrote the Constitution. And for that reason alone, it's worth getting to know Cicero. Relevant? You can hardly get more than a few pages into "On Duties (III)" before you come across this:

"Granted that there is nothing unnatural in a man preferring to earn a living for himself rather than someone else, what nature forbids is that we should increase our own means, property and resources by plundering others."

I would guess that the Founding Fathers agreed with this sentiment completely, for the simple reason that once citizens begin plundering one another, one of the primary social goals (living safely and without fear of your neighbor) is instantly destroyed. I would also guess that they didn't write this into the Constitution because it was so terribly obvious: every well-educated man understood Cicero and his concept of Natural Law. But they lived before the advent of Karl Marx...

I also suspect that Cicero's "religion" was pretty close to the religion of the Founding Fathers. Cicero imagined the mind of the Universe to be God, while the physical body of the universe was made up by all the natural phenomena around us, and he was quite sure that each one of us carried within himself a spark of that divinity. As far as the afterlife, Cicero basically whittled the possibilities down to two. Either we cease to exist, and cease to feel pain, or there is an afterlife, and we will enter it. In either case, there is no reason to fear death.

Another essay included in this book, "On Old Age," is a true Ciceronian classic. If I had my druthers, everyone would receive a free copy on his 60th birthday. It's a simple, short read, and cannot really be summarized in a short review.

A must read for anyone especially for those interested in Ancient Roman History. Cicero was an exceptional man who lived during the time of Julius Caesar. I only wish I could somehow travel back in time to see him in the law courts and listen to his speeches. I have read this particular biography 3 or 4 times and will read it again and again I am sure. I am not a scholar yet this well written story suits my laymans mentality very very well.

Essential for every Nintendo 64 fan

Comprehensive. I pre-ordered this thinking it would be a good reference book, something I could flip through to reminisce on some of my fondest gaming memories; however, when I received it I was surprised at the depth and scope of this book. Yes, it includes a half or full page write-up on all 388 N64 games (Japanese, NA and PAL) with cover art and screenshots which would have been enough, but it also includes a lengthy history on the development and life of the system itself. It has extensive segments on every accessory released (both official and unofficial), all hardware variations of every region, add-ons, magazine coverage, developer interviews, hardware particulars, analysis of every 64 DD game, the book even details and identifies every unreleased game including screenshots when available. The book is well-written, something often hit-or-miss in anthologies like this. The Nintendo 64 Anthology is already a prized addition to my collection and will be frequently referenced even after I finish reading it. I cannot recommend this book enough if you’re considering purchasing it.

THE Definitive N64 Book - Don't hesitate to buy this!

I've been going through this book more thoroughly, but I do want to note that, like some review here say, there are some awkward typos! Some things that should have been caught - ".... Dream Team of Fifftteenth Developers....", weird characters out of place ",...Castlevania release.a." and inconsistent capitalization. the WCW/NWO World Tour first spells WCW as "WCW" then goes "WcW" for the rest of the description; then it back to "WCW" when its referenced in the other games or WWE/WWF games. My review still stands - I really enjoy this book.

This is the third gaming book I've purchased in the past couple of months. I originally bought The Art of Atari, which really surprised me at how great of a book it was. Then I bought Playing With Power, which ended up being really disappointing due to how it was poorly produced(but still worth collecting).

Then I saw this recommendation. I'm still going through this book, since I've just received it, but wow. I had never heard of it and there was Kickstarter for this - they aimed to be THE comprehensive Nintendo 64 book and they have absolutely 100% NAILED it.

First the production quality - this is just a well made well designed book. It's bound well, printing is crisp, layout is easy to read despite the insane amount of information packed in here. This is honestly what Playing with Power should have strived for.

This book has an incredible amount of content. I honestly don't know what else they could have packed in here. They go into the history of the N64 - from concept to final release. Interviews with developers(including one who worked on Goldeneye) - release history...it goes on and on. Let me list some of the amazing content they've fit in here(hate to sound so promotional)

Every published game for the N64 - including descriptions, release dates, Rarity(scale of 1 to 5), Rating(quality of the game 1 to 5), release dates, region it was released in, Box art for US UK and Japan and there's sometimes some sidebar facts about the games.

Accessories released on the N64

Part numbers for N64 consoles(in case you happen to need a specific one? Doesn't matter, cool they included it)

Technical breakdown of the hardware including the motherboard

Unreleased and Canceled Games(descriptions for some, listing for others)

A Collector's Check list - each game has a checkbox for you to keep track of what you own, also for each reason - wouldn't recommend blemishing this great book with ink.

Remakes and Releases

This book even goes into the release of the 64DD and all of it's games.

There's more I'm forgetting, I'm sure - I can only tell you if you grew up playing the N64 or have any interest in classic gaming, this is a must buy. Don't hesitate, wait until it's in stock and buy it. Extremely impressive, I hope these guys release more books for other consoles (SNES or Genesis, maybe?). This is the standard of quality other publishers and authors should adhere to when creating a book for a console.

Take note Nintendo and Prima, this is how you do a good retrospective book.

Nintendo in collaboration with Prima recently released "Playing with Power: Nintendo NES Classics" in conjunctions with the release of the NES Mini system. It was billed as a look back on the NES as well as including strategy guides for NES games included in the NES Mini. It was, disappointing to say the least. Despite being presumably curated by Nintendo or at least by someone with Nintendo's blessing, the book was incredibly light on content and was disappointing to say the least.

Luckily, less than a month later, Mr. Manent's "Nintendo 64 Anthology Classic Edition" was released, and I am beyond impressed by how much content and detail he was able to pack into this book in comparison. The book has a full listing and description for every single US, PAL, and JPN N64 game made and released. He even examines several N64 games that were cancelled prior to release as well. Also included is a well detailed history on the development and life of the system, as well as interviews with industry veterans who worked on such games as Goldeneye, and the epic failure that was Superman 64.

To summarize, I am extremely impressed with this book, and I can only hope that someone at Nintendo takes notice at how a well a book like this can be before they make another attempt.
