Ok but some frustrating gaffes.

Very helpful overall but some issues. First, the Pocket Guide that comes with the book, while helpful, does not actually have the ECG ruler that the book claims it has so you can't use it to find the HR on an ECG. Second, the book's explaination of how to find the axis using the Pocket Guide is pretty good but when you have to use the aVF as your isoelectric lead it is useless as the directions then tell you to look at lead II to see whether to use the positive or negative number... the only two numbers available are a zero and a +/- 180 so which one is positive and which is negative? You are better off to do it the old fashioned way (by looking at lead I then lead aVF to determine the quadrant first). Other issues have to do with editing errors, such as insisting that Infarction= oxygen deprivation and Ischemia= death of tissue (these definitions should be reversed and in fact they are... kind of... on the Pocket Guide but they are repeatedly wrong in the book). Other than that, a good supplement to any textbook on cardiovascular/pulmonary systems.

I buy this book every semester I teach nursing clinical for my students. I came across this book the year AFTER I graduated from nursing school. It's easy to read Nd understand and lots of visuals to bring it all together. Very worth the cost of the book!!!!!

About the Author
Michael Wink is a professor of pharmaceutical biology and a director of the Institute of Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. He is an authority on secondary metabolites of plants and their pharmacological effects.

Ben-Erik van Wyk is a professor of botany at the Rand Afrikaans University, Johannesburg, South Africa. His research interest is in systematic botany and plant utilization.

Informative and thorough

"Medicinal Plants of the World" strikes a wonderful balance between being exhaustive and too cursory, the book reviews the medicinal properties of approximately 300 plants and discusses some proposed mechanisms of action. Importantly, it carefully points out that there still is a large knowledge gap and that we know very little how these plants exert the effects. The authors point out that, in contrast to standard pharmaceutical treatments, plants contain a large number of different chemicals that may have an effect in combination, which cannot be fully understood based on the properties of each individual chemical. Lastly, the photos are of good quality and are helpful in identifying the plant in the "wild". One aspect that would have been useful for the relative novice is to provide a quick guide to identifying these plants using the botanical characteristics (leaves etc.) of the plants.

Photos alone are worth the price of the book

I first checked this book out from the library, renewing it twice before purchasing it. Containing gorgeous plant photos, wisdom, chemistry, and an excellent index, this is a great reference when working with plants, herbal medicine, essential oils, flower essences, homeopathy, etc. etc. I refer to it again and again. More of these plants are relevant to me than I've found in regional medicinal plant books.

I have the fourth edition which has an extra 116 pages; maybe the text is smaller in the new version. I will still order this new edition. The book looks to me easier to read than Douglas Futuyma's book "Evolution" but it is a good idea to have both of them.
