Excellent reference for christian business ethics

I am a Christian CEO in Hong Kong and have written a book review on this book for the Graduate Christian Fellowship a few months back. An excellent reference. Touched on many important and controversial issues including capitalism, bribery in third world, honesty, advertisement and marketing, etc. Presented many primary articles with balanced, provocative opinions from all sides. A book for the serious thinker. NOT FOR NEW CHRISTIAN BELIEVERS NOR FOR NON-BUSINESS PERSON. Only one criticism: the editors' own comments at the end of each chapter is a bit weak; not the same calibre as the 20-30 authors.

Excellent text for a graduate level ethics class

I found this text to be well written, particularly from the standpoint of restraint, by the authors from engaging in strong persuasions as I have seen an many modern texts. But rather they allow the facts or the consequences to reveal themselves and allow the reader to reason their own conclusions. It provides an excellent source for clear thinking, in respect to very convoluted issues, and reveals the reader's deeper motives - allowing for a personal review of these motives and the ability to change ideas, yourself, based on reason. Basically this text prompts you to examine your thoughts and responses, rather than to indoctrinate.

Although this book certainly was a bargain. I would not say that it was good. There was good reflection on the biblical implications of doing business, but I felt like the cases were disappointingly unsatisfying and not academic. Just like the class that the book was required for, Beyond Integrity offers a great perspective without being academic or compelling. Also, do not buy this book on Kindle! It was too hard to use the Kindle version for the class and sometimes it seemed like the Kindle version did not have sections that my classmates had.

We have been greatly influenced in our thinking and writing by the impact that the Internet has had on consumer information, decision making, and purchasing options. This is reflected in the substantial increase in attention that we have given to consumers' behavior on the Internet, and the importance and power of the Internet as both a channel of information and a channel of distribution.

In this new edition, we have intensified our emphasis on marketing strategy, using both a theoretical and applications-oriented approach. Always true believers in the marketing concept, we have tried our best to meet the needs of our consumers—students, marketing practitioners, and professors of consumer behavior—by providing a text that is highly readable and that clearly explains the relevant and timely concepts on which the discipline of consumer behavior is based. This eighth edition of Consumer Behavior is divided into four parts, consisting of 16 chapters. Part I provides the background and tools for a strong and comprehensive understanding of the consumer behavior principles examined throughout the rest of the book. Chapter 1, The Impact of the Digital Revolution on Consumer Behavior, sets the tone for the book. It introduces the reader to the study of consumer behavior, its diversity, its development, and the latest evolution of the marketing concept and examines how companies use past consumption behavior as the foundation for creating and keeping satisfied and profitable lifetime customers. The chapter also introduces a simple model of consumer decision making that provides a structural framework for understanding the interrelationships among the consumer behavior principles examined throughout the book. Chapter 2 provides readers with a detailed overview of the critical consumer research process and the techniques associated with consumer behavior research, including a discussion of positivist and interpretivist research methods. school and college undergraduate level at the same time.

The authors have accomplished this.

With this text you can begin learning to program in Mastercam

from the first chapter.

The CD included makes familarization work without the expense

of buying the full program.

excellent mastercam book i recommend it

being a former cnc programmer and now instructor i am very impressed with this book. It is easy for novices to learn the proper techniques of mastercam programming. It presents a logical learning pattern using graphics instead of confusing
and lenghty definitions contained in many other texts.I found the exercises to be well designed to illustrate the important
aspects of the software. Machinig exercises contain detailed
process tables to help the student understand the sequence of operations and tooling needed to produce the part. As a bonus
the text comes with a fully functional student version of mastercam V9.0 and accompanying student exercises so students
can practice at home. I like the fact that the authors concentrated on laying a through foundation in 2D CAD and

Not only respectable, but highly recommended

While a co-worker was spending hundreds of dollars to learn Mastercam at the local college, I learned as much at the same pace at home with this fine book. It should be sub-titled as a tutorial. The book begins assuming you know nothing about CAD or CAM. It carefully explains in a straight-forward method all you need to know. Everything is done in sequence so each excercise teaches new commands to be used. It is a great primer for new users learning Mastercam Mill. I have shared it with experienced users at work as a reference manual for 2-D machining. The book comes with a Students disk containing Mastercam software and exercises, to help you learn. This was a real time-saver for me. I would recommend this book to all beginners and professionals.

Dan Roam offers a simple explanation about how to draw a problem/solution picture.

Draw a circle in the upper left corner of a sheet of paper and label it me. Draw a cloud-shaped circle in the lower left; label it my problem. Draw the shape of a closed Swiss army knife on the center of the page. Add and label "blades" (what you see, what to look for, what if..., how, when, where, why, how much, etc.) that deal with me and my problem. Those blades help you think of others that will help identify the problem, alternatives and solution.

What Roam drew on one page took me 90 words to describe, by the way.

Quick, fun, and useful read

Dan Roam is really cool; I really enjoyed this book. Yes, the pictures are kind of corny. Yes, the examples are kind of cartoonish. Yes, the exercises seem like they are from kindergarten. But somehow Roam has taken corny, cartoonish, kindergarten tasks and turned them into something really useful.

I read this book and enjoyed it, but I didn't get the full value of the content until I went back and worked the exercises. Though I don't remember what SQVID stands for or any of the other organizing schemes that Roam uses, I really did learn something from his very original presentation of simple visual thinking tools.
In the process of working through the exercises in the book, I distilled the complexities of my work into four intuitive pictographs. My boss at the time hated these pictographs for some reason, but the value of the pictographs was demonstrated conclusively a few weeks later. I was presenting an overview of our processes and methods to a group of visitors from Turkey. Although they all spoke English as a second language, all of the text-based materials fell flat. The lightbulbs of understanding lit up all around the room when the discussion turned to those four silly pictographs though.

Unfolding the Napkin is a quick, fun, and useful read.

Great book, the digital version has some issues...

It's a fun book, and a quick read. However the digital Kindle Edition was not well formatted with regard to the many images and doodles throughout the book, sometimes causing confusion, and all the images were low quality. When I tried to zoom in to see details they immediately pixilated. There were also several typos in the book, which I can't believe got through any editor, so I assume these are also related to the Kindle Edition.

The 2nd Gets Lost In The Middle
By Life Is Good!
I really enjoyed the authors first and third book. The ideas are simple and almost common sense. Useful for those who find it difficult to see options, sell ideas, or present data in simple form. The author provides a membership web site with videos if you find the contents of his books too complicated. For this reason alone. I am giving just 3 stars. If the author can't get his point across in a book and by using what he teaches, there is a problem. Maybe it is greed. Maybe, he needs 3 books to get the point across. Maybe what he is teaching isn't as easy, usable or workable as the author wants us to believe? The books are good, but according to the author courses, seminars and online video subscriptions are needed in order to understand how to use simple drawings.

About the Author

Robert L. Barker, PhD, is a consultant, advocate, and clinician in private practice. He is currently engaged in helping social agencies, advocacy groups, and political organizations raise funds, prepare grant proposals, and manage public relations campaigns. He also helps social workers prepare to give legal testimony in lawsuits. He was full professor since 1979 at the National Catholic School of Social Services, The Catholic University of America, in Washington, DC. He was also codirector of the Potomac Psychiatric Center in suburban Maryland, where he specialized in marital and family therapy, group therapy, and group work. For many years he also served as a consultant in designing, reviewing, and monitoring the development of social work licensing exams.

Dr. Barker has worked with various social advocacy groups and is particularly interested in international social welfare, homelessness, and research on effective use of social work personnel. He has taught social work skills in Europe and Latin America as well as in the United States. As part of a research project, he spent several months living as a homeless person in various U.S. cities. During his military service, he cofounded and led the Society of Air Force Social Workers.

Dr. Barker received his MSW from the University of Washington, Seattle, and his doctorate from Columbia University, New York. He founded and edited the Journal of Independent Social Work (later the Journal of Analytic Social Work) and has written more than 100 articles for professional journals, numerous articles for popular magazines and newspapers, several unpublished novels, and 23 published books.

His published books include Forensic Social Work: Legal Aspects of Professional Practice; Treating Couples in Crisis: Fundamentals and Practice in Marital Therapy; The Green-Eyed Marriage: Overcoming Jealous Relationships; Social Work in Private Practice: Milestones in Social Work and Social Welfare; The Business of Psychotherapy; Private Practice Administration for Therapists, Counselors and Social Workers; The Resource Book; Differential Use of Social Work Manpower (with Thomas L. Briggs); Educating Undergraduates for Professional Social Work Roles; Using Teams to Deliver Social Workers; and all six editions of The Social Work Dictionary.

About the Author
Eric Flamholtz is Professor of Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior in the Anderson Graduate School of Management and a faculty research fellow in the Harold and Pauline Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is also President of Management Systems Consulting Corporation, which he co-founded in 1978.

Yvonne Randle is Vice President of Management Systems Consulting Corporation. She has extensive consulting experience with companies ranging in size from small entrepreneurships to multi-billion dollar enterprises and is a lecturer on executive education programs in the Anderson School of Management, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Better than expected

I have great respect for Mark Broadie's research, and highly anticipated this book. It's better than expected.

Using new analytic methods (for golf at least), the book comes up with several major points about scoring and shot making. Interesting, the early work of Cochran and Stobbs (1971) came up with some of the same conclusions.

1) Long game approach shots are most important.
2) Long driving (as long as fairly straight) is better than short and straight.
3) 4 foot putts are the most important putt. Practice these.
4) You don't make many putts outside of 5 feet.
5) Short game is less important than long game.
6) Stay far away from out of bounds, even aim in the rough.
7) Make sure your putts go past the hole.
8) Sand shots are harder than chips.
9) Get as close to the hole as you can, do not play to a "good yardage".

So, for the amateur or pro golfer, what are the takeaways?

1) Practice your irons and hybrids
2) Try to bash it off the tee
3) Practice 4 foot putts.
4) Practice chipping only if you really stink.

What is Dave Pelz to do about this new data? Try to ignore it, it contradicts his preaching.

What am I supposed to do about this new data? Get better at irons. Hit it 20 yards farther. Make 4 footers.

A Landmark Achievement in the Study of Golf

Mr. Broadie has combined sophisticated data analysis with the PGA's state-of-the-art shot tracking database (Shotlink) to finally solve nearly all the age-old dilemmas in golf. It is a fascinating work, and heralds a new era in golf statistics, analytics, and ramifications to strategy. Without either (the analysis) and the data (shotlink) these truths would have continued to be hidden.

What kind of mysteries are being solved here? Only all the important ones, like:

*Why traditional golf statistics (GIR, driving distance average, Fairways-in-Regulation) can't rank players or predict winners.
*Why calculating "averages" is incomplete at best.
*What's more important, driving or putting?
*How should we reconcile counting stokes (per hole), vs. inches (putts), vs. yards (drives)
*What should you practice?
*Where should you aim?
*Why are the best players in the world the best?

When Mr. Broadie matches the data to his formulas, the names that rise to the top are the who's-who of golf: Woods, Els, Donald, Lefty, Rory, and the rest. There's a reason these guys are all household names and it is NOT their GIR, FIR, or Average Drive. The "Shots Gained" statistic explains it all, for every shot, drives, approach, even pitches and putts. The entire game is laid bare, finally. I would not doubt that Mr. Broadie already has a sequel in the works (he should!) because the contents of this book could be applied to much deeper golf questions. This edition had to get all the easy targets out of the way, but they are whoppers.

I can now see how every other golf book in history has fallen short. Nobody has had shot data like this in the history of golf, along with the skills to properly analyze it. It is not an exaggeration to say that 95% of golf books are now obsolete -- and now factually proven wrong. Right now it is spring, and my email box is full of ads and promotions that read (actual quotes: "How to Score Low! Did you know the pro's average 290 yards... blah blah" and "... master the short game with our wedges! ... drop the score on your scorecard!) ... I can now see the holes in these statistics (even the real ones) from a mile away.

I know what to practice now, and it isn't 30-yard pitch shots and 30-foot putts anymore!

** Criticisms **

Very, very few. Almost all the information in this book is illuminating for golfers of all skill levels. Mr. Broadie takes extra pains to make his statistics relevant to 80, 90, and 100-golfers.

I found the chapter on putting to be a bit tedious, for not much new insight. Many putting methods have covered these topics in detail over the years, and while Mr. Broadie's statistics confirm many of the truisms, they don't really add a lot of new insight. Those who haven't put in much study in the putting arena might find it helpful though. I found it quite comparable to the AimPoint school of putting technique, but without the specificity of the AimPoint charts (which is also used in PGA broadcasts to reveal putting lines, and is heavily physics based).

I definitely wanted more strategic analysis on game-type situations (fodder for the sequel, perhaps!). A fascinating study on how to play holes with OB on one side is very useful. I wanted to see strategies for going to tight pins, long par 3s or short par 3's, fairway bunkers, and similar. Like I said, there is still plenty of room for a sequel.

I don't often gush about products or books, but honestly I have read a lot of golf books, hang out on golf forums, and read all the magazines. This is the best golf book I have ever read. No joke.

This book will dispel forever any mistaken ideas about the essence of golf.

This book systematically destroys myths about how pro tournaments are won and about how everyone, including amateurs, need to think about the game in order to improve. "Drive for show, putt for dough" is one persistent myth that Broadie systematically dismantles step by step through an irrefutable statistical analysis that proves his points, one by one, like a geometry proof. The book reads like a textbook with important points highlighted in boxes in the text. At the end of each chapter in the "19th Hole" section he summarizes the points he has made in the chapter helping the reader to understand. This is a seminal work on golf and will change forever how serious students think about the game. This book is every bit as important as Hogan's Five Lessons or Harvey Penicks Little Red Book. Highly recommended for ardent students of the game.
