Anne Worrall is Professor of Criminology at Keele University. She is the coeditor (with Pat Carlen) of Gender, Crime, and Justice and author of Offending Women: Female Lawbreakers and the Criminal Justice System and Punishment in the Community: The Future of Criminal Justice.

About the Author

William Zinsser is a writer, editor and teacher. He began his career with the New York Herald Tribune and has been a longtime contributor to leading magazines. His 17 books include Writing to Learn; Mitchell & Ruff; Spring Training; American Places; Easy to Remember: The Great American Songwriters and Their Songs; and most recently Writing About Your Life. During the 1970s he taught writing at Yale, where he was master of Branford College. He now teaches at the New School, in New York, his hometown, and at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Video Game Devs needs to read this.

As a video game Creative Director in a field plagued by clutter, bloat, and passive voice writing from lame producers, silly art directors hung up on movies, and young designers who think they know everything, I love showing them the secrets hidden away in this classic. Absolute must have for any writer, especially in the business world. The first few chapters help change the world of business writing for the serious person. How did our English teachers miss this one?

Excellent advice, without talking down

I agree with the other reviewers here who advise you to get a copy of Strunk & White and the other "rule books". But in "On Writing Well", William Zinsser goes beyond do's and dont's to discuss *effective* communication, a subtler and more difficult skill to develop. He also preaches patience: like any skill, you hone it over time and have to keep practicing.
As you'd expect, the writing is clear and logical throughout and the book is also well organized. The chapters in the first half focus on general issues -- "Simplicity", "Clutter", "The Lead and The Ending". The second half focusses on writing within specific fields -- Science and Technology, Business (a *wonderful* chapter everyone should read), The Arts, and so on.
What I most appreciated about Zinsser's approach is that he does not aim for the lowest common denominator in his target audience, and assumes the reader knows how to write correct English. I know people have been critical of Zinsser's approach and his apparent political bent (keep in mind this was first written on the heels of the Watergate scandal -- this 25th anniversary edition is more up to date). But any of these critics, regardless of their views, would be doing well to express themselves as clearly as Zinsser does, and that is exactly the point of this book.

Well Written

Not only did this book educate me about how to write well, it inspired me to become a writer myself. Zinseer's writing is outstanding. He moves the reader along, as he encourages you to do in your writing, at a steady pace with sufficient pause to educate. However, don't be fooled. This book contains a tremendous amount of information and is a book that you will find yourself reading more than once. Zinseer covers a number specific areas including science, technology, arts, sports, business and others. Anyone who must do any writing as part of a job, or other civic duty, will benefit from reading this book. It is on my short list of references which I re-read whenever I have a chance.

I liked the first 4 chapters - it tell you to ...

I had high expectations of this book.
Written by 'Zen Organizer', I have expected a different type of financial guide book, the one that is different in its concepts & messages.
I liked the first 4 chapters - it tell you to carry a smaller wallet, carry cash, and put all the bills in order, the same side - because you need to be organized in order to fill powerful & able. I liked this fresh approach the author brings - she sure is the 'zen organizer'.

Then after chapter 4, the books becomes somewhat of 'little bit of this' & 'little bit of that'.
It greatly talks about investing and retirement account, such as 401k.
I'm a CPA and can understand & verify all the information is correct, but if the readers have wanted to get a deeper insight into investing, there are plenty other choices available that goes in depth.

the book shuffles from investments to teaching kids the value of money, donating your goods to charity, and creating a holiday shopping budget.
I don't think people buy this book thinking to learn about the investments or getting tax deductions - while it's great to touch on the concept, this books goes somewhat unnecessarily detailed in those areas but not in-depth enough to show all the options available.

As a result, you get the book that tells you little bit of everything, nothing seriously light or in-depth.
For that, my final conclusion of this books is that 'it is a bit of a mixed bag'.

Good concept, but not a thorough guide

I am a few months into this book and I have to say that I am slightly disappointed. I started off with high hopes. The book had some good tips in the introduction and the author sounded powered up about getting my financial life in shape and organized. I had a few gripes early on, but kept pushing through thinking that it would get better as it went, but it hasn't. I have found the book to be a mixture of irrelevance and surface-level information. For example, the budgeting week tells the reader to set up a budget. It explains a little bit of why a budget is important and sort of gives one example, but if the reader has never created a budget before they may not even know what categories are appropriate to budget for or how much they should be contributing to each area. Another example, one week she says to organize your office area, but she doesn't cover what is important to include in your desk or office area.

As I get further into the book I am continually frustrated by the fact that the author just tells the reader to do something instead of explaining how to do something or what the best way to do it might be. After reading I usually can't even recall what I am supposed to be doing, or I have to look-up information to fill in the blanks, which is frustrating--I feel like the book should be a comprehensive guide (or at least that's what I expected it to be).

Additionally, you may want to consider that you will have to make further investments to go along with the changes that the author suggests. I had to buy pouches to organize my purse, files to create a filing system, drawer organizers to organize my desk, and so on (and I didn't buy many of the items that she suggested). She even suggests buying new furniture for your office if it is not suitable. Mine is not suitable, but I am on a tight budget (the reason why I am reading books about finances) and I cannot afford to replace furniture.

On the bright side, I did find the chapter about creating a filing system helpful. The author explained exactly what the reader needed and what exactly to make files for. If only all of the weeks were as detailed.

The book may be helpful for someone who needs a sort of coach to tell them to do something and when. I find myself skipping through it, because when I get interested in something I want to learn everything about it, fast. (Maybe that's why I've been frustrated with the fact that it seems incomplete).

Very well said

Seems like basic information at the first glance, but I got a real picture of my finances after taking her advice and implementing her system. A year later, after reading several other financial books, I still rely on the techniques in this book for the organization of my information and documents. Some chapters and sections are boring and unnecessary, but overall this book was well my time and money.

With the new By Architects series, Ediciones Pol�grafa launches an innovative project dedicated to showcasing furniture and objects designed by some of the most important architects of the twentieth century. Three titles open this series: Alvar Aalto, Jean Prouv� and Ray and Charles Eames.
Best known for their contributions to architecture, furniture design (especially the Eames chair), industrial design, film and photography, Charles and Ray Eames remain among the most renowned American designers of the twentieth century. The couple married in 1941 and moved to California, where they pursued their furniture design in molded plywood. During the war they were commissioned by the U.S. Navy to produce molded plywood splints, stretchers and experimental glider shells. In 1946, Evans Products began producing the Eames' molded plywood furniture. Their iconic molded plywood chair was called "the chair of the century" by the influential architectural critic Esther McCoy.
In 1949, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in Pacific Palisades, their design and imaginative use of materials making this house a mecca for architects and designers internationally. Today it is considered one of the most important postwar residences built anywhere in the world. After the war, the Eames continued to create new furniture designs, such as the Fiberglass Chairs (1950), the famous Lounge Chair and Ottoman (1956), the Time Life stool (1960), the 3473 sofa (1964) and the seating for Dulles and O'Hare airports--a design still in use in lounges around the world today. In the 70s they expanded their operations into cinema, producing many beautiful short films. Charles and Ray received honorary degrees and awards from universities and organizations across the country. The Eames Office still operates today.

a beautiful book, but how to continue??

I came across Dillard's book by mistake, while roaming around the University of Michigan library. I started reading it and couldn't put it down. All I knew about Black English was from movies and TV shows that parodied it (e.g. Airplane). After going through the book and repeating the examples, I couldn't get over just how lovely it sounded. So by now I knew that Black English was a real language -- like Greek or Chinese or Spanish. What next? How does one continue from there?
I decided to visit the Afro-American Studies dept. By then I was a grad student at Indiana University, and innocently enough, I thought that this was what a person in the academia did when they wanted to learn something -- they went to consult the experts... The experience was an overall disappointment. I spoke to several instructors, several students, left messages with the secretaries, but alas -- it was very difficult to get through to people: They were all very suspicious that someone would even think of studying Black English. Eventually I was able to learn a few things from peoples' comments:
- Currently, there is no such thing as a textbook for Black English in the same way that there are textbooks for Spanish or Russian. You will need to make due with books like Dillard's, and there aren't all that many of those either.
- Black English is more than just a vocabulary. A dictionary of "Jive" won't do. You need to pick up some grammar.
- There are many dialects of Black English, and Black English changed over time.
- No one I spoke to had ever heard of a university course in Black English.
- No one I spoke to knew of any book written entirely in Black English, though there are books (including novels) that have generous samples.
- I've found a reference to the New Testament in Black English (I'm NOT refering to the Clarence Jordan's Cotton Patch version of the New Testament), but no one seemed to know where to get a copy (if you do PLEASE let me know).
Eventually, though, a kind instructor pointed me to Zora Neale Hurston's books, for which I couldn't have been more grateful. So, if you're interested in Black English, get Dillard's book and go through it a few times, to appreciate the structure of the language. Then if you would like to see some very beautiful if somewhat out-of-date examples of Black English, pick up a copy of Their Eyes Were Watching God, and in addition to reading a beautiful novel you'll also get a beathtakingly beautiful sample of Black English. Classics on African American Vernacular English AAVE

I came in contact with this whole AAVE (aka Black English) business when I took a linguistics class in undergraduate. The Oakland School Board then in 1996-97 outbursted the controversy of recognizing AAVE as an official instruction language in schools.
On a linguistic persepctive, as this book suggests, AAVE should be considered a dialect of English for it is what linguists call "rule-governed". It means that Black English has a distinctive sets of grammar rules, structures, and sound patterns. It had been hypothesized that West African immigrants came into the country and worked as slaves. They might speak a pidgrin that over course of time developed and became a creole. This is known as the Creole Hypothesis. It explains the striking similarities shared between Plantation English (spoken by Southern Whites) and Black English.
Dillard's book, though published more than 20 years ago, still reflects the distinct linguistic characteristics of AAVE. The dialect distinguishes itself with forestressing syllable, regularization (i.e. using "I goes" rather than "I go"), syllable contaction (i.e. pronouncing "suppose" as /spoz/), perfective "done" form, invariant be form, and more.
AAVE therefore is just like any dialect we might hear people speak except it is often stigmatized; that is, in linguist's language, language is degraded and the speakers feel ashamed to speak the language. Dillard's book deals with grammatical and social aspects of the language. Highly recommended.

J. L. Dillard is quoted in many other books on black english. It is full of interesting tidbits about black english, and is loaded with examples. an excellent work, even for the 1970s!

I have likened most psychology and counseling texts as being about as exciting to read as a Chilton's car repair manual.
Human beings are such wonderfully complex and fascinating of all of creation; so much so that one would think that the study thereof would be more engrossing and absorbing than what it actually is (in the classroom, that is).
Enter "Behind The Mask," one of the most thorough, comprehensive and insightful books I have ever read on human nature. Unlike many of my other texts, this one is a "keeper."
Scholarly without pedantry, entertaining at times, thought-provoking at others, this book should be required reading in any mental health related profession.
This is the kind of book that one will refer back to repeatedly (this book is a lot like Yalom's in this regard)as there will always be something "to chew on."
