Urban riverbanks are attractive locations and highly prized recreational environments. The designs of urban river landscapes must fulfill a broad range of requirements: flood control, open space design, and ecology are as a rule the three dominant themes, and they must often be reconciled within a very restricted space. The river must be understood as a process: governed by changing water levels, shifting seasons, erosion, and sedimentation, the river environment is not a static entity but constantly changing the design must be flexible and take this into account. This book is the product of a multi-year study that subjected more than fifty Western European projects to a comparative analysis. Theresult is a systematic catalog of effective strategies and innovative design elements. First, designers and planners are given an overview of the broad and varied spectrum of design possibilities. The book s processoriented approach is especially helpful where the focus is on long-term, sustainable measures. The publication consists of two linked volumes that enable the reader to consult the systematic catalog and the case study section side by side. The easy-to-navigate structure and an extensive glossary provide further guidance, while the work s highly distinctive design makes it visually appealing as well and invites the reader to leaf through and explore it.

Review
"With its clear language and impeccable organization and design, River.Space.Design. serves not only as a great resource for design ideas and examples, but also as a challenge to how we consider rivers in an urban context [...] In the book s introduction, the author writes, What has been lacking up to date is an overview that presents the wide diversity of design possibilities for urban river spaces in a systematic and transferable way. This book aims to fill this gap and serve as a primer and reference for designers of urban spaces. River.Space.Design. is absolutely successful in this regard and will hopefully inspire designers to find ways new ways to engage their community s rivers."In: http: //dirt.asla.org/2013/01/16/rethinking-our-relationship-with-rivers/"

A new classic for river design
By Reeds by the waterside
This book is simply brilliant and really is new classic reference for all those interested in rivers, whether engineer, landscape architect, urban planner, ecologist, city, environmental activist or interested citizen. The applicable content of the book is excellent. The unusual layout of the book in two foldout halves will take up space on your desk as you read it, but the division of the book into tools and case studies is actually very helpful as it helps pick out design principals which can then be applied to other projects. I have had this book for more than a year, and I have come back to it again and again for inspiration and information.

I would say that the English translation does not quite match the original German version in terms of the scientific precision and insightfulness of the writing, so if you can read German fluently go for the German version. But nevertheless, I have yet to come across a book in English which matches this one in terms of a comprehensive overview of the potential of river design and including numerous urban examples. The understanding of river dynamics within real-world design constraints is outstanding. The graphic layout of the book is so clever that it is equally accessible for professionals as for non-professionals.

The book seems pricy, but in terms of what you get for your money it is absolutely worth it, and it is basically two books in one anyway. This is a book which empowers its readers. For all those interested in blue-green infrastructure, blue-green cities or ecological services, this is the real thing.
