The question of male-female differences in leadership style and performance is carefully analyzed against the empirical findings. Whether or not one buys into Chemers's particular leadership theory, this book covers so much ground and covers it so well that it should become a benchmark work for future leadership studies.

Good leadership reference

I would definitely recommend this book. This is a book that contains a comprehensive review of the major approaches to leadership with the definition of leadership that would be widely accepted by the majority of theorists and researchers. The major points of this book bring many aspects of interpersonal process to have effects on a dynamic external environment. The purpose of this book make the complexity of the leadership process a bit more manageable, increasing the ability to understand what effective leadership is. This book offers a comprehensive analysis and integration of the major theories of leadership. It utilizes a functional analysis presenting what leaders must do to be effective and specifies the processes related to each function. Each chapter discusses and explains the basic principles, the research evidence, and the relationship of the theory to other theories. In addition, this book offers the most comprehensive research of cultural and gender factors in leadership and the gender factor differences in leadership style and performance is carefully analyzed against the experimental findings. Ultimately, the book provides a basis for the presentation of an integrative model of leadership that brings together function and process. As a student myself and a situational leader, I felt that the concepts from the book can be very well integrated and utilized into day to day lives, not for just leaders and those who are in charge, but also for those individuals who are looking for the most effective way to communicate with the surroundings. The text itself is relatively easy to read, however, it might take a bit more time to comprehend certain theories. Overall, I would recommend this book as a textbook for classes that are referencing communications or business leaderships. I also recommend for those who are in leadership positions and are interested in advancing their interactions with their subordinates.

An Integrative Theory of Leadership (An Instructor's Perspective)

Having used this superb book as the basis for teaching an undergraduate Leadership Class, I can simply affirm that Chemers offers a thorough and clear assessment of the leadership literature through 1997. His inclusion of image management as a key element of leadership makes intuitive sense and has been supported by solid evidence. More importantly, Chemers provides a superb overview of the evolving leadership literature -- a topic about which more has been written than any other in the business field. Students had no problems understanding Chemers' explanations about the underlying background concepts associated with leadership theories. As a leadership scholar and a practitioner for twenty-five years, I felt very comfortable with this well written book and consider it a great source of information as I write about leadership issues.
