Keiko Hirata is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science, California State University, Northridge. Mark Warschauer is professor of education and informatics and associate dean of the School of Education at the University of California, Irvine.

Good Intro to Japan

The book is a good primer for those not familiar with Japan and it's society. Readers already involved with Japanese studies will not find anything new here. The book has six chapters dealing with different aspects of the society. Chapter 1 has insights into the corporate culture and the changes it has gone through since the nineties. The next chapter tries to integrate different perspectives on the rise of otaku and other "outsiders". These two chapters are the poorest written as too many generalizations are made and other studies have taken different conclusions. But, after that the book becomes rather interesting.
Chapter 3 talks about the graying population problem along with immigration issues. Chapter 4 is about Japan's relations with it's neighbors China and Korea. The issues of the Senkakus and Takeshima are briefly discussed. The Fukushima incident follows in chapter five and is very informative. The final chapter is about the country's education system. The book is recommended for those wishing to learn more about Japan but only for beginners.

What ever happen to Japan?

I have been waiting a long time for an updated account of the once powerhouse Japan. Author Keiko Hirata describe in detail the root to Japanese national policy on immigration , social benefits, to corporate greed and the downfall of its legacy. Interesting look at the household scarfaces and wage discrimination between men and women this day in age. Author Hirata reminds readers no longer is their job security once out of school as in decades past. Instead many young are unable to find full time work nor for some care to and the effects on Japanese society as a whole going forward.

This book is an excellent introduction to various aspects of the japanese society. It is well written and has an easy to follow narrative, geared towards the general public, rather than people with special academic interests. The Introduction covers the concept of harmony, which is so integral to japanese society that the character used to write it in Japanese also means Japan. The chapters cover such important topics as corporate culture and work ethics, gender roles, the problems of an aged society, international relations and immigration, the socioeconomic conditions that contributed to the devastating nuclear crisis of Fukushima, and the structure and function of the japanese educational system. The authors offer a comprehensive look at many facets of contemporary Japan, underlying the fact that the same characteristics of the japanese psyche that helped the nation recover from WWII so remarkably may very well doom it to obscurity in today's globalized economy. As a foreign resident in Japan, I often caught myself thinking things like "Hey, I've seen this" or "Oh, that's so true". I also learnt a lot about several matters that had eluded me, or issues that foreign residents simply don't have much access to. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn about the basic functions of japanese society and, essentially, what it means to be Japanese.
